Sports_Freak Posted March 19 Posted March 19 I hear Riley was diving for a ball in CF yesterday. In an exhibition game! So Hinch pulled him out of the game. Sometimes he needs to protect players from themselves 1 Quote
papalawrence Posted March 19 Posted March 19 (edited) Through 5, Greene with a dinger. Tork 2-2 and a bb. Mize gave up 2 in 4.2 Edited March 19 by papalawrence Quote

If they make the team, how long of a leash do they get? We need good RH bats in the lineup but we don't need a couple of guys hitting .150 with no power. Quote
IdahoBert Posted March 19 Posted March 19 I wish we had a pitcher like Ryne Duren of days of old with Coke bottle glasses, and a reputation for unpredictable wildness just to scare the heck out of Bregman. This is not the better side of my personality, speaking by the way. 1 Quote
Sports_Freak Posted March 19 Posted March 19 Chafin isn't going to make the team, is he? Batting practice pitcher. Quote

Seriously though, as much as ST results are denigrated, even if the outcomes don't much batter, they are directing his AB - what's he swinging at, what is he taking, who is he facing etc - so I think there is still useful info being gained there. 1 Quote

How about this guy? https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=dalkow001ste One year, he struck out 262 and walked 262 in 170 innings. 1 Quote

He did that for a Class C team, after which he was rewarded with a promotion to a Class B team the following season, during which he walked 196 and struck out 150 in 103 innings, after which he received a promotion to Class A! 1 1 Quote
IdahoBert Posted March 19 Posted March 19 “Dalkowski was famous for his unpredictable performance and inability to control his pitches. His alcoholism and violent behavior off the field[citation needed] caused him problems during his career and after his retirement. After he retired from baseball, he spent many years as an alcoholic, making a meager living as a manual laborer. He recovered in the 1990s, but his alcoholism left him with dementia[6] and he had difficulty remembering his life after the mid-1960s.” https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Dalkowski This is a pretty interesting story. I wonder that if he actually did throw 110 mph the umpires didn’t give him credit for pitches that just nicked the strike zone because they were too fast. Although there’s a good chance, he was way out of the zone. Quote

gehringer_2 Posted March 19 Posted March 19 (edited) Mize threw well again today - I don't know how he doesn't make the rotation. Javy with two hard hit balls, Tork on base 3 times, Jake with a hit and a walk, Torres still punishing the ball. The lineup is looking a lot better from the batters box on the left side. Sweeney is a guy who needs to get going though. Defensively I like the idea of he and Baez on the left side. Edited March 19 by gehringer_2 1 Quote
chasfh Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Yes, I believe Casey has solidified the #5 slot in the rotation, which is praise as faint as can be given a former 1/1 entering his eighth season as a professional. Quote

Or 4th spot assuming they will be looking for ways to limit Jobe's innings. Quote

I don't think there's much difference between #4 and #5, honestly. Only #1 really counts for anything for vast majority of teams, including us—unless we get a very nice surprise somehow. Quote
