Gage Workman designated for assignment by Cubs.  Should the Tigers bring him back or let the Cubs keep him?  I think he would be a strong player to have at Toledo, preparing for another shot at the majors.

Don’t they have to offer him bank us before designating him for assignment? So did they and we said no ?

He's offered to every team as a rule V and if nobody claims him, he is offered to Detroit for 50K.

I can see a team like Chicago WS or Colorado claiming him.

Think the same rules apply—they would need to keep him on the ML roster all season.  Definitely easier for either to pull that off.

I’d like to get him back.

No.

He can still be traded in DFA Limbo. He goes through waivers and other teams have a chance to claim him. Whether acquired by trade or by waiver claim, the Rule 5 restrictions apply.

If he clears waivers, the Cubs can't outright him to the minors without first offering him to the Tigers for $50k. Given the Tigers cut a AAA position player yesterday, i have a feeling they are optimistic they may be getting him back. If he returns to the Tigers, he has no such restrictions.

Gage Workman was in the Tigers system for four years and never even made it to AAA, so, no surprise he washed out of Wrigley Field within a couple weeks. Maybe he’s salvageable and can have some kind of big league career, or, maybe he’s simply an organizational soldier type which, that’s cool, there aren’t enough actual prospects to fill every position in the minors, so maybe he can still get on field work for a few years before he goes into coaching.

No other team can claim him unless the Tigers pass first and the Cubs release him, which I doubt they do.  If the Tigers want him back, they pay the Cubs 1/2 the Rule 5 fee back.  If the Tigers do not want him, the Cubs will assign him to one of their farm teams, probably AAA.

That's not true.

the Cubs hardly gave him a shot - 14 AB. Maybe because he made 3 errors in 7 games. I thought Workman was supposed to be good glove - has he lost it already at 25?

Yes.  He has aged out and has no future ever.  Just like Trey Sweeney.

I don't think anyone's arguing Workman has no future whatsoever. It's probably not a future as an everyday major leaguer. And that's fine, not everyone can be that. Who knows, maybe he'll surprise us. I wouldn't place any action on that prop, though.

OK, I missed the part where other teams can claim him.  I guess I glossed over that since it has never happened that I remember.

Happened with Will Vest.

Also guys are traded all the time the day of the draft.

Rule V update on Liam Hicks: hitting 245 with 1 HR, but allowing 18 steals in 19 attempts

don't think they are getting him back from Miami.

Nido has surprised, Liranzo and Briceno are rising, but looks like a small error to not protect Hicks

(nice return for Kelly, Hicks and Tyler Owens)

The Tigers are switching Mize and Jobe starts. Pushing Jobe back to give him extra rest. Mize is our #4 and Jobe our #5 SP. Mize Friday and Jobe Saturday.

I think they are going to do this a lot throughout the year to lessen the innings on his arm with it being such a long season compared to what he’s used to.

Did not happen to Vest, he was Rule 5 drafted by Mariners from Tigers and later returned to Tigers.  No other team picked him up after the Mariners removed him from the 26 man roster and was returned to Detroit.

Guys are traded a lot day of Rule 5 draft, I never said otherwise.

I misunderstood what you meant. I thought you said the tigers hadn't had anybody returned lately.

I can dig up examples of waiver claims. Off the top of my head Spurling was acquired in spring training.
