I think they are going to do this a lot throughout the year to lessen the innings on his arm with it being such a long season compared to what he’s used to.

I wonder if there's a number of innings they have in mind? 125? 150? If so, they'll have to shut him down at some point. Montero and Cobb will have to come thru for us.

Did not happen to Vest, he was Rule 5 drafted by Mariners from Tigers and later returned to Tigers.  No other team picked him up after the Mariners removed him from the 26 man roster and was returned to Detroit.

Guys are traded a lot day of Rule 5 draft, I never said otherwise.

I was always under the assumption that players selected in the rule 5 draft had to stay on the roster all season or else offered back to the team they were picked from. I never heard about waivers or allowing to be traded. There was a video on social media of Vest in the BP in Seattle and a coach telling him he better get it together or they would send him back to Detroit. 😅

I would guess it's around 150-160 which won't take much shutting down.  They can relatively easily keep moving him back a day here and there and get him in the 25-28 start range which at 6 innings per is around 150.  In reality, a combination of pitches/stressful pitches/innings is more what they will base the quota on.  And  if they get into the post season, as long as he's continued to be spaced out is he ok to continue?  If everyone is healthy they wouldn't likely need him to have starter innings this postseason, so more likely to be a couple innings here and there.

Seems a little aggressive since he didn’t eclipse 100 IP last season.  But I pay to get into a ballpark rather than being paid to work in one, so what do I know?  As long as they have a reasonable plan that includes some postseason work.

Unless he really eclipses everyone else on the staff, he'll just go to the BP for the post-season. In fact with this staff probably two starters go to the pen.

You assume there will be enough healthy SPs for the playoffs at your own peril.

The Tigers have gotten really good at syncing their 6th starter up with double headers. Starting Montero Monday was a stroke of genius.

So now that it’s 10 games in 9 days, I would imagine he finds a start somewheres along the line.  Maybe get away day game in Houston?  Or perhaps that doesn’t line up well enough.

Jobe was already moved back to start Saturday.  Mize starting today or tomorrow doesn't affect that consideration at all.  The extra two days suggests something is up with him.

I think it's just taking advantage of the 27th man while they can.

That's a good point.  It may be that the pen has been rested and it may be opportune to use an opener

If they went Jobe and Mize tomorrow, who would start next Thursday?

I got some incomplete info on some minor league deals...

Opt Outs:

  • Dietrich Enns: 7/1, 7/20, 8/15
  • Ricky Vanasco: 7/15, 8/15
  • Ryan Miller: 7/1 (Upward Mobility)

Enns also has a clause that if he is on the major league season at season's end, he's a free agent with a $3M club option.

I don't have info on Balazovic, Gamel, Flores, Serven, Jones, Madris, or Gage.

Chafin's opt-outs are defined by the CBA: May 1 and June 1.
