The nice thing about the Skubal situation is that we made the playoff last year, are off to a good start this year, and have a top 3 farm system.

Last year at the trade deadline it was looking bleak with us being nearly out of the playoff hunt and with Carp hurt and Tork and Meadows in the minors…..so there was reason to entertain trade offers for Skubal for future pieces.  Now—there’s not much of a reason for us to deal Skubal strategically….so that changes the mentality of everything.

And to add in my option we are not signing Skubal. Not with Boras involved.

If we could extend him on a front-loaded deal where he gets his fair market value in money overall but lowers the payroll burden if he’s hurt in the back half of the deal, I think that’d be the way to go.  Not deferred money, just hyper skewed towards the next two-four years.

It's probably more likely that he signs a deal with substantial deferred money, assuming the new CBA is similar in business feel to the current one. So, I would think a Big Six franchise (NYY, NYM, LAD, SFG, BOS, CHC), or an adjacent franchise like Atlanta or Philadelphia, would be the top suitors for him.

Are any of these big six franchises or Atlanta or Philadelphia known for having pitcher friendly parks? Does being at Comerica help Skubal enough that he would want to stay here? I’m curious about that instead of the influence of Boras on his decisions.

San Francisco has long been understood to be good for pitchers. Seattle is probably the best pitchers' park, but it would be a surprise in today terms for them to win the Skubal sweepstakes.

He's under team control thru next year? The money is crazy, IMO. The Tigers know how much they'll offer him, if he turns them down, they gotta move him by the 2026 trade deadline. The comp pick wouldn't be enough.... compensation.

Would keeping him and winning the World Series be enough compensation?

DTrain loves the Tigers.

When I was watching that on FS1 last night, he had lots of good things to say about the Tigers, but he still said he thought Cleveland was the favorite.

So it's Late July 2026 and the Tigers are bound for the playoffs but not World Series favorite AND have exhausted all efforts to sign Skubal to an extension. What do you do ?

If they are bound for the playoffs, then they can win the World Series especially if they have a couple of great starting pitchers.  I don't think a team that is looking like they are headed for the playoffs would ever trade their ace at the deadline.  I could maybe see them trading him before the season, but even that seems unlikely to me.

Exactly.  You compete for chances at the prize, and with the projected rotation, you have a solid chance.  You don’t give that up for the equivalent of 1 additional 1st rounder (assuming you lose him for the compensation pick).  And in reality, you’d be lucky to get 2 top 100 prospects for 1/2 season of Slubal anyway if recent deadlines are an indication.

You don’t trade Skubal if you are leading the division unless your staff is stacked.  Then you consider it.  Otherwise you ride.

The Tigers didn’t trade Scherzer in 2014.

Well, of course. But that really is a next year problem. Do you see this Tiger management team offering Boras $30 to $35 million per for 6 or 7 years? I don't see it but you never know. Skubal may give us a discount. After all, how much money does a guy need, 🤣🤣

They would 100% sign Skubal for 6-7 years at $30 mill per.

Also, any suggestion of a contending team trading their ace for prospects is utter nonsense.

They'd be more likely to trade two of their top 10 prospects for a two month rental arm to put them over the top.

the Twins were a contending team when they moved Santana - they finished 1 game behind the Sox for the division in 2008 after moving him. And won the division in '09 & '10 without him.

IIRC the trade ended up pretty much a bust for them but they were a contender when they made it. Carlos Gomez eventually did OK but the rest were pretty meh.

They didn't move him at the deadline.
