well, I've been watching baseball a long time, have never seen a 4BB 1 HR night.

You don't watch the Yankees, then, because Aaron Judge did it just last year. 😉

To your point, though, Tork's is only the 53rd time this has happened in the 124+ years of game-by-game data kept by Reference. That's a little less than once every two years.

Tork doesn't show up on the list as of 9:10am ET because Reference is a little slow on the draw this morning.

Tork is also the second Tiger to do this. Jason Thompson did it in 1979. It didn't help those Tigers win the game, either.

Call it a Barry Bonds night

I would have thought of it as a Ted Williams night, who did it once. But yeah, Barry Bonds did do it once, but then, so did Bobby Bonds. So did Hank Aaron, Jimmie Foxx, Ken Griffey Jr, Rickey!, Mickey!, Mark McGwire, Mel Ott, Duke Snider, Frank Thomas, and Freddie Patek.

The only two guys to do it twice were Edgar Martinez and Jim Thome.

0-15 with runners in scoring position. This season is starting off a lot like the last or one with poor hitting and leaving too many guys stranded on base.

To be fair, we are short a few key offensive pieces.

What did he do during the spring. Right

I don't care a lot about his spring stats.  I don't think he's going to suck.  In fact, I think he'll be a pretty good hitter.  My concern is that the switch to first base might be permanent and if that's the case he'll have to improve quite a bit.  He came to the Tigers with a reputation as a power hitter.  There is certainly time for that to happen, but we haven't seen it yet.

I did the search without limiting it to 5 PA and found 7 Tigers including a couple who had two hme runs.  The last one was JD Martinez in 2017.

Is MLB different from the app?  I originally purchased MLB at bat, but last year I couldn't find it anymore, so I used MLB instead and assumed they had merged.  It was always live until today.

Apropos of not this, I listened to the Arizona feed of the Cubs-Diamondbacks last night, and they played local Phoenix commercials, which I was thrilled to hear. I always have loved hearing charming local commercials during ballgames. Last year, MLB At Bat would play only commercials that are local to the subscriber, meaning Chicago commercials for me, for every team's feed, not just Cubs and White Sox; and not only while I was in Chicago, but no matter where I was, anywhere in the country. Turn on a Tigers game on At Bat while driving in North Carolina, and there's a commercial for some Chicago-based ambulance chaser. And since it was a streaming ad deal instead of local radio commercials, it would be the same. God. Damn. Commercial. Over. And. Over. Every. Break. It was maddening.

I hope they maintain commercials local to team feeds going forward.

Agree. I think Keith has to make a swing change before he can hit for power. It looks to me that to handle MLB pitching  he's gone so compact now that he doesn't get his arms extended much - and I think that's fine for this point in his career. But it also means for now he's not your profile as a 1B.

We'll just have to see how it plays out. We don't know if Torkelson continues to hit, we don't know if Torres plays D any better or hits in way that makes him more  or less likely to be a Tiger next season or if the Tigers will even be interested in re-signing him - if we're lucky McGonigle streaks through the minors!

I just rebooted my phone and the game is now over!

Boomer comment: I miss the old days when you could just press a button and start listening to the game

Same here.  I know some folks were pleased about the contract he signed, but I have my doubts.

I'm willing to give the 23-year-old a few more games against not-World Champs before I push the panic button on him.

I don't think the Tigers are committed at this moment to making Colt the permanent first baseman. I'm thinking they moved him there for thsi year because they want him in the lineup to get big league trigger time, they were planning for the contingency that Tork might be done here or never be able to play first effectively again, and they found a better hitting second baseman as a stopgap than they could a first baseman. Colt could move back to second next year, with Tork at first, or else someone else holding down the position while we wait for Liranzo or Briceno to take it. Or maybe Colt will long term at first if Jace Jung or McGonigle come up to play second. I guess it's certainly possible Colt will long term it at first, but I don't think that's the committed plan as of this time.

Hold on, autocorrect typed in “Freddie Patek”.  Who were you actually typing in there?

Even so, he'll still need to get better if he is going to reach the level they seem to have targeted for him given the conract commitment.

I get he’s only 23.  I’m just not all that impressed by him and I thought the extension was a reach.

According to my exhaustive research on bbref, Keith will have made $6.66M after this season.  Maybe that means he’ll start hitting like a beast next season?

I had no problem with the contract.  If the Tigers think he's going to be a star, a creative contract like that might be the only way to keep him long term.  I just think there is still a good deal of uncertainty as to how good he'll be.

No doubt. I might be duly concerned were he 26 and had three full years under his belt already.

I think he did fine last year as a rookie.  I just believe there is a great deal of certainty surrounding every young hitter.  Hitting MLB pitching is really tough.

Keith had multiple 4-6 week stretches last year where he hit at an elite level for any position... unfortunately he had even more stretches where he hit at below replacement level or in some cases even Javy level.

To me the fact that he atleast showed for month long stretches his rookie year that he could mash is a good sign.

That gives me more hope that he could be a plus bat then if he just hit for a .675 ops consistently throughout the year.

I'm surprised Barry Bonds only did once. His BB numbers are crazy
