I remember I was wearing a Tiger’s sweatshirt at a Trader Joe’s, and a man came up and offered his sincere condolences to me about Al Kaline dying.

MLB.com has the lineup as this. If true, hope just a planned off day for Greene?

Probably just a planned off day.  They need to manage to the season, and so a day off with the series in hand vs a LHP (which admittedly is only a minor concern here) in not so wonderful weather is fine.  He's available if needed.  If not, pick his spot to enter the game.   Either way, there's a little mileage saved.

The exchange happened in the battery aisle?

Its the Jerk Sox.  They've already got a foot out the door anyway.  Their next series is in Cleveland on Tuesday, but they have to walk because the school bus that they used to get to Detroit had to be returned.  The south side schools had spring break last week, but they're back to school tomorrow.  Ain't no way they could haul the Jerk Sox from Detroit to Cleveland, head back to Chicago, and then be disinfected, all in time to pick up the youngsters tomorrow morning.

Plus, if they're gonna give Riley a planned day off, doing so on a getaway day against the White Sox is as good a time as any.

Greene needs a rest 8 games in?    He can't DH?    Why is Carpenter batting SIXTH and Margot Clean Up?

I know it's the White Sox, but come on man.

They dropped Carpenter in the order because it's a LHP and it would be incredibly stupid not to drop him in the order.

I believe batting Carpenter sixth is a confidence-building move.

No getaway. We remain in Detroit to face the Yankees. All night games...temps in the 30's.

Oh...they changed the game times. Smart...the heck with the idiot schedule makers.

Have him in the line-up at all against LHP may be a confidence building move which I am glad they are making.

Having Carpenter lower in the lineup vs a LHSP rather than higher in the lineup is simply to limit the possibility of a 3rd PA vs said LHSP.  Perez probably isn’t any great concern at all anyway.  But this also allows Ibanez to hit higher in the lineup and possibly have an extra PA vs a LHP.

This is the correct answer.

I do think having him bat against LHP is a confidence builder, but the reason for batting him sixth is just what you said.

Some combo of that and ego management for sure. Even though his numbers may warrant it, it would be easy to take batting a hitter of Carpenters quality 8th or 9th as an insult.

Agreed. He gets limited at bats against LH pitchers. Judge the quality of his at bats on a larger sample size. Plus, we have a couple/few injured outfielders.
