Tying run in scoring position. Holy.
Let’s match the Vancouver Canucks winning after being down 5-2 with a little over minute to go in regulation last night. .

Still a great 9th.

What are they going to do with Keith? His demeanor in his last AB was terrible. Looked defeated before he took the 1st pitch.

If they can send Torkelson down, they can send him down. Jung might be ready to come up.

Suter has 24 goals? Red Wings should have hung on to him.

Great effort in the 9th.  They never quit.  The bullpen did not help.

Overall, it's a different feel this year than the end of last year.   Last year was magical, but unsustainable.  This year, they seem like a legitimately very good team with a strong rotation, Tork breaking out and Green and Carpenter healthy and hitting.  They still have fight, but it's not Hinch bullpen magic holding it together.

It's really hard to see them sending down a top propspect with a 12/12 BB/K ratio after 12 games.

Sure, but he’s doing absolutely nothing else well.

On the other hand, it’s time to figure out what the plan is for him.  Is he gonna be a 1B?  2B?  DH?  Elsewhere?  He doesn’t have the athletic diversity to be moving around the diamond without extensive practice.  He’s not a McKinstry/Ibanez/Don Kelly.  So pick one spot and let him play it every day, be that in Detroit or Toledo.  That might help his deer-in-headlights looking face a bit.

It's still just 12 games.

The thing is, he's yet to show the power a 1b would need even if Torkelson weren't currently locking down the position like a Dibold safe.

You are right.  He hits like a second baseman!

I don't know why but losing to the Yankees feels like a tragedy beyond a normal loss and it leads one to feelings of dread and despair.  Like why did you include parachute mines that looked like toys in the bombing run on the military facility that was next to the orphanage you warcriming swine?!

If Tork keeps hitting like he has been, he needs to play every day. But Keith is proving to be a liability in the field st 3nd base. And he's not hitting enough to be a DH. Plus the fact that 2nd base has several options. IDK what the Tigers will do, he's put them in a terrible position.

It feels even worse with a day off coming up and the next game on Apple TV. No games on FDS until Saturday.

Agree that key guys you mention appear to be taking big sticky steps forward this year. Plus, Baez seems to be renewed somewhat (positive WAR!), and Dingler, despite his defensive miscues today, seems like he can put together a league average campaign. It's a shame Parker Meadows is not here to show us what he can do, or Vierling to show us if he can at least maintain what he was last year, but hey, you gotta work with what you got.

I also believe that between Scott Harris's roster construction, and AJ Hinch's effective management of that roster during the game, this team feels very much like more than the sum of its parts.

Tell you what, though: I don't know how much longer we can carry Ryan Kreidler. He's hitting like a pitcher.

I am not pessimistic about Keith long term, but yeah - they have to put him on a path he can follow and dig out of his hole. I still go back to two realities: Torres is not likely to re-sign with the Tigers, and in the 2nd half last season I think Colt was playing a decent 2b. In perfect world those two things would argue to send him back to Toledo to become the best 2B he can and when he does so well that Torres can be moved at the deadline he gets his gig back or he just comes back and everyone shares the AB with DH so there are enough to go around.

But it's not a perfect world  - first because a guy is not going to like being jerked around by the org that way that course would play, but also because that means you've hitched your wagon to Torkelson. I'd love to be able to do that - but after at least another 150 or so PA to prove what we are seeing today. But if he doesn't snap out of it himself soon, a decision on Keith isn't  going to wait another 50 games.

Harris is going to have to earn his salary figuring this one out.

If Torres gets moved at the deadline, it means the Tigers are out of the race.  So, I don't like that plan.

So lets assume Torkelson is having a >5 WAR season and is ensconced at 1b. If Torres and Keith are splitting 2B and putting up the same numbers what is the advantage of keeping both even if you are in a playoff hunt? Maybe there is something else (like a reliever) you need more. Now of course since Keith and Torres are L/R pair, they wouldn't be the same player even if they are each producing at a similar rate on their side of the platoon - but Torres is not going to be a happy camper if he is playing for a fat contract and he ends up on the short side of a platoon because Colt is left handed and Torkelson is out producing him (remember this is all hypothetical!).

Yeah - I know - the good kind of problems for a team to have!

In the real world, I think Colt with straighten up, JHM will end up back at Toledo and Torkelson and Torres will both take some time at DH and Keith will rotate through all three spots - 1B, 2B, DH, IOW the orginal plan coming out of ST.

My two take aways from todays game.  1 - Malloy needed to see a few more pitches before swinging at the second pitch he saw.  Horrible AB.  2 - Keith does not need to be sent down but he needs to sit 2-3 games and get his head out of his butt.  Still think he will have a good year but I hope not to see him playing 1B again this year.

I don't know, he's basically unplayable in the field right now, and with Tork making a case to be the everyday 1B, Keith doesn't really have a role outside of DH when Torres returns. Sending him down to work on defense in a low-pressure setting might be the best thing for him and the Tigers.
