It would probably be asking way too much for Tork, Mize, Javy AND Maeda to all have bounce-back years.

3 outta 4 ain't bad.  And considering the longer term, its the right 3.

Maeda goes when Cobb is activated.  That has to be the move

Probably, but in the meantime, Maeda serves a real purpose as the garbage time guy who can save the bullpen, particularly in the 5-7-run difference range late in the game when we can’t use a position player to pitch.

This is the first beer I ever drank. Out of a can exactly like this and probably in 1959. I was watching a baseball game with my dad and I was given a half of a little metal orange juice tumbler of Strohs. And it tasted really good. The funny thing is is that I’ve never been a drinker. So I was not corrupted by this.

The only team we would get to taste beer when we were kids was when dad would have a Stroh’s in a bottle for dinner, and then at the end of dinner he would allow one of us sons to finish the last sip. It was warm and awful.

It might have been part of a strategy of his. If it was, it didn’t work. 🍺

My dad and granddad didn't drink. Uncles on my mother's side would do so at family picnics. The beverage of choice back then was Iron City. Quite easy not to acquire the habit at a young age.

It wasn't until I was 18 (17j and lived away from home

that is a role, but does it happen enough to spend a roster spot on when Foley is pitching like a potential high leverage stopper in Toledo? I'm fine with letting Foley prove it by building a little more resume but if he keeps doing what he's doing, the value is soon going to exceed Maeda's

It sounds more like an excuse to not eat is salary than a role.  If they think he can become effective enough to expand his role a bit, then that's another story.

It’s a role.  But it’s also one that Hurter or Hanifee can take and do a lot better with while Foley can slot into one of their middle relief spots

Foley and Lange (if he ever gets healthy) can both be lights out when they don't walk batters. Foley seems to found his command at Toledo - a little more time to prove it's not a SSS mirage and I'd definitely bring him back.

Do you think Harris and Ilitch would accept blown games and losses from Maeda just to save face by not eating a sunk cost?

I’m thinking Lange will always walk batters. That’s just who he is, and he would have to become a completely different pitcher to not do that anymore.

As for Foley: he’s always been a guy whose results have punched above his weight. He has trouble striking out big leaguers and his walk rate spiked last year. I’ll look forward to seeing him come back to the team at some point, although I’m doubtful whether he’s going to be the cavalry that saves our bullpen.

I assume their only consideration at this point is whether they have someone better vs can we extract anything more of value from someone who's getting paid by us one way or another. Personal feelings about saving face don't enter into the calculations.  Make a decision when you have to.

That's what I assume as well.

I think he wouldn't be on the team if he didn't have the salary he has.

He isn't blowing games as he is currently being used.

True as far as it goes, but of course there is an opportunity cost of the runs you give up in some other close game because (just as a possible example) a back on his game Foley isn't available. The decision must - or at least should!- always turn on what the alternative is. If Maeda were cut for a guy from Toledo who would only be good enough to go into the same  mop up role, why bother? If you have a positive value pitcher ready to fill the slot, that should lead to a different conclusion. So deciding if you have a guy you need to bring up is just as relevant as resolving whether Kenta has any possible upside to remain.

He is a solely a mop up guy for games like yesterday. I won't be surprised at all if he gets cut at some point during the season. He showed glimpses in spring training. Hard to keep Foley in Toledo if he can help the Tigers now

And he has the salary because he has a track record, and because he has a track record, he gets more chances to make good than Joe Blow on the minimum. So it’s all connected I guess.
