looks like Hicks is not going to TB, staying with Marlins; TB had trade lined up, but it was with Phillies to select Vasil from Mets and then he was sent to TB

I get why people like the OBP and his LH stick, but no power, and Hinch is not playing a C who is a poor defender.

Marlins have had some of the worst catchers for years so maybe he stays there

Especially since they DFA Badoo and Englert still on 40.

You still need guys you can outright for later additions. Englert is probably next on the chopping block. If you would have added Workman or Hicks at Englert's expense, you wouldn't have that option with them.

I never really thought of that.  I guess you can be better off exposing someone in the Rule V rather than protecting them as the 39th or 40th man and having to eventually outright them and lose them on waivers.

I also never knew that. Makes sense. Thanks.

It's literally not allowed. You can't outright somebody during the offseason (except that short period right after the season before the 40 man roster is set) if they were added to the 40 man roster after August 15. So if you straight up add too many players, you won't be able to outright them and may have to trim somebody you don't want to when you add a free agent.

I like Workman. He has some tools. He'd have been protected if he were a RH Bat. I hope he does well.

He had an outstanding season at age 23 in AA.  Might be a case of a guy who took some time to develop (he was also a COVID kid).  Still, was probably worth the risk of getting selected.  And likely he doesn’t make it through the season with the Cubs, who appear to be trying to be a contender.

I’d like to get him back, but won’t lose any sleep over it.
