DetNews posted Lynn's Top 50 prospect list ($). Interesting - to me at least as some of these guys names are new to me - in that he has a lot of Latin American signees on the list, including IFs Joe Dickson and Gabriel Reyes and C Steven Madero in the top 20 along with Franyerber and C Enrique Jimenez.

Caveat in that Lynn is getting most of this info fed to him from the organization, and also that Cristian Santana was recently near the very top and is now nowhere to be found.

If they made it to Detroit, Lynn did not include them, even if they maintain rookie eligibility.

True, although they are almost certainly biased.

I'm willing assume the new regime might be different, but the old regime's reporting on their own prospects was pretty useless.

I assume they are more knowledgeable, but they have a vested interest in either pumping up their propspects or holding back information.

As long as every player is a potential trade chip, you will never get an honest evaluation of their strengths and weaknesses from the org; and I don't expect that. But I do expect less credulity from Henning. :classic_sleep:

There’s no reason for a team not to provide accurate information. What, do you think, other organizations are going to base their decisions on anything other than their own staff?

Pumping up prospects for what purpose and what audiences? Most of what is known about prospects is well known within the industry and can be shared with fanbases. There may be some proprietary methods and processes that wouldn’t be shared, but that’s all. No team is going to use “hype” for making decisions.

there might not be a reason to not to, but there is also absolutely no positive reason from them to ever talk publicly about any prospect player's downside, if for no other reason than to keep everyone happy on the farm. It never servers any purpose to bad mouth your own people even once you understand some of them aren't likely going anywhere.

Why would anyone ever expect that? There’s no reason they can’t provide accurate and interesting information for the edification of their fans.

If you rely solely on teams for info on their own prospects, you have an incomplete picture. I'll have to dig up one of Micro's takes on this topic. I know in his prospect writing days, he had a variety of sources across the league to crosscheck information and has provided good reasons for that. But yes, teams are incentivized not to give the complete picture.

I guess this goes here. This is the first full offseason of the 175 man domestic reserve limit. The reserve lists didn't exist prior to 2021 and has been 190 the last few years.

The Tigers are about to run out of space and will need to start cutting players to make room. They are at 170 right now (not including Horn in DFA limbo). Other teams have this crunch too. I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of minor league free agents don't sign until after minor league season starts and teams can start stashing injured minor leaguers on the 60-Day and full season IL.

of course that's fine but a lot of fans would also like to know what's in the system that has real potential for them to be seeing in a couple of years. Of course if you really want to know you can make the effort to follow the MiLB teams.

Prospect rankings are always very subjective.  And anything from Henning should never be taken seriously.  Just look at it as content for entertainment purposes.

I wish someone told Avila that!

Baseball Prospectus put out their top 101 today and 7 Tigers made the list. Jobe was 4th overall followed by McGonigle at 6!, Clark at 31, Rainier at 56, Liranzo 58, Briceno 64 and Jung at 97.

And so is Clark at 31 (for the opposite reason).  They’re not very high on him.

I guess the downside with Clark is the chance he is one of those kids who just developed so fast and so early that he was miles ahead of his cohort, but then doesn't have that much of a ceiling once everyone gets older and catches up to him. But he's just turned 20, too soon to worry seriously about that.

Jaden Hamm must have been knocking on the door.  He made BA's list.

The list gives us a complete infield including catcher, a starting pitcher and CF.
