Tiger Cubs (notes on the minors)

At the Mud Hens game Saturday, Wingenter looked good, except for the 3 run HR to Clemens in the first - They fought back to 3-2, then brought Blair Calvo in - which was a disaster.  He wasn't helped by a 2B error by Rizzo at 1B, but gave up 4.  Game was shortened to 7-innings because of the rain delay - but at least I got to check an item off the bucket list.

I'm not suggesting it should be, but making an observation that outfielders today are hitting for the same average that backup middle infielders did in the past. I suspect other stats are down, too, like OPS, runs scored, though I'm too lazy to look it up.

Offense is way up with the new rules, including nearly half a run more per game

Just looking at hitting stats in general, including at the ML level, should we reset our expectations about what good looks like?  It seems like a .270 batting average was pretty pedestrian, especially for a good hitter, but now that seems less achievable.

Is .250 the new .275?

Given how strikeouts have spiked over the past decade-plus, it’s quite possible.

I would give up on batting average as an indicator of performance, especially in the short term (year or two), and especially with developing talent.

Yeah. Was talking to some guy about Jung and he dismissed him as a prospect because he was hitting only .240 (at that time). His FC+ was 130 though. The guy didn't want to hear it.

Gil was signed in the same class as Briceno, but he was ranked 21st by BA and got 1.2 million and he is just 18. If he keeps this production up, I would not be surprised if he starts making it on some top 30 lists and gets pushed to A-ball next year.

Badler scouting report:
Gil drew a lot of attention from scouts, more so for his in-game skills than his raw tools. He’s an instinctive, high baseball IQ player who puts together consistent quality at-bats with an easy swing, good contact skills and an all-fields approach to get on base frequently.
