RandyMarsh
Ignorant to how this all works but can Goodell and the NFL appeal or add on to this or is this all final? If it is final that is a giant win for the Browns and especially Watson.

I suppose it is better than a longer or full season suspension, but it feels like their season is over with Jacoby Brissett starting out of the gate and not Watson. There are worse QBs than Jacoby Brissett that you could have as a backup, we have two of them, but you're not generally winning with your backup QB. Unless of course you're Matt Flynn and you play the Lions. The Browns are @Panthers, Jets, Steelers, @Falcons, Chargers, Pats to start the first 6 games of the season. I could see the Browns though being 2-4 or 1-5 to start the season, thus being eliminated from the playoffs by the time Watson comes back. MichiganCardinal
Putting outside the NFL’s hypocrisy for a moment…. I’m interested to see if the Browns get the QB they think they’re getting. He last played in an NFL game on 1/3/21. His next game will be on 10/23/22 at soonest, and he’s largely been away from all NFL activity through that time… Has he stayed in shape? Has he thrown a football? He’s getting paid no matter what, there’s not much incentive there if he hasn’t been staying active. On top of that it’s worth mention that for being talked about and paid like the best QB in the NFL, he’s 28-25 as a starter.

How is something final that could not be final? The arbiter made her final ruling and suspended Watson 6 games. The NFL can appeal her final decision. It's no different than being convicted of murder in court. The verdict is final but you can always appeal. The sentence is still carried out because it's final and an appeal can overturn that final decision.
Hongbit
The OP asked if the NFL could add on any additional punishment or if that was the final number. The NFL can’t add on to the suspension or change it unless they appeal the arbitrators final ruling. This is relatively new process and was put in place in the latest CBA. Goddell doesn’t get to be judge, jury, and executioner anymore.

MichiganCardinal
So talk to Tom Brady and Sean Payton = forfeit hugely important picks, get suspended for a number of months, pay a large fine.............. Have 24 women make allegations of sexual misconduct upon you = six-game suspension, no fine I'm not saying what Ross did was okay, but when this punishment came out I automatically assumed that it was found he instructed Flores to lose games, or offered him money to do so (as Flores alleged). That was not substantiated, this is just for tampering with Brady and Payton. I get that Watson is a unionized player and Ross is an owner protected "only" by wealth, power, and insulation, but I could point to Daniel Snyder or Robert Kraft too.... Seems the NFL's priorities may be a bit out of whack. Edited August 2, 2022 by MichiganCardinal
Jason_R
No CBA for owners. And these owners… if Ross had gotten away with it, you would see the Wild West. Edited August 3, 2022 by Jason_R

And I know that this won't sit well with a number of people, but the NFL's job isn't to police and punish for "normal crimes." If an NFL player goes out and drives drunk he should be held accountable for this crime the same way as if any ordinary joe drove drunk... the criminal justice system should punish that person. Now, "crimes against the sport" are another thing. These things (generally speaking) are completely legal outside of the the sport. Your average Joe and go and bet that his favorite team will lose its upcoming game... that's 100% legal (assuming he's doing it in a legal manner), no problems, no issues, no police, no court, no jail time or fines or anything. If Tom Brady goes to a casino and bets on his team to lose... well, that's a major issue. This is a "crime against the sport" and the league has to punish heavily because they are the only one who will. Watson's accusers had their day(s) in court. The grand jury (where the prosecution lays out their case without the defense being able to say anything) didn't find enough evidence to indict. Many of the civil cases are settled. That's the courts punishing Watson for his "normal crimes" against society. Anything the NFL does on top of that is more window dressing and for PR reasons than anything else. 1

Motown Bombers
Watson chose to sit out last year because he wanted to be traded. It wasn't some sort of punishment.

I’m not exactly sure how it all went down last year with the Texans and the timing of when he asked for the trade and when the seriousness of the allegations came out making him virtually untradeable with looming criminal charges. I think he was pissed because they traded all their vets and didn’t want to be a part of their rebuild and would’ve gotten his wish had he not completely fucked things up by getting exposed as a sexual predator.
