I saw on one of the talking head shows earlier this week that with the Lions and Campbell's success that Campbell is now the hot coaching mold that everybody is looking to try to get. Not just Campbell but Demeco Ryan's success as well this year in Houston is having teams think twice about just hiring the next hot shot coordinator but instead looking deeper into the person and their motivational abilities. Also they may be going back to puttiing more emphasis on them being former players as well.

If that is indeed the case Aaron Glenn may actually be the guy that gets a job over Ben Johnson.

I was about to say your second paragraph as I read your first paragraph. I think Aaron Glenn fits that mold very well.

I don't think Glenn has been given a very fair shake either, at least when compared to Ben Johnson.

Glenn inherited one of the worst defenses of all time in 2021. As far as first and second day picks go, he's been given Levi Onwuzurike, Alim McNeill, Iffy Melifonwu, Hutch, Paschal, Kerby Joseph, Jack Campbell, Brian Branch, and Brodric Martin. On that list, the only "wow" player is Hutch. He's developed many of the others into serviceable players... Compare that to Ben Johnson though, who took over in 2022, with Jared Goff, a top 5-10 offensive line, and ASB, and has since added three "wow" players in Jamo, Gibbs, and LaPorta.

I would be hugely in favor of that.

Which is not a slam on AG as a coordinator.

I felt earlier that maybe teams would want to see a little more out of the Lions defense before putting him ahead of Johnson. But if teams' priority is to find a "leader of men" first and X's & O's second and AG is the perfect candidate for that... good by me for a lot of reasons.

1) Campbell could make Ben Johnson the OC AND assistant head coach... giving him a training course for next year's round of head coach openings. I think that would be a plus for Ben.

2) I love Ben Johnson as OC so... I'm most reluctant to lose him. Glenn? I might be very reluctant to lose him too... but there are other circumstances involved with him as well... such as:

3) We would get two 3rd round picks for losing Glenn to the Commanders? I think that would be huge this year. We'd have (4) picks in the 3rd to maneuver around and get players that Holmes & Campbell love. I think that would bode huge for the team's long term future.

4) The team and Campbell in particular are extremely high on Kelvin Sheppard as a future coordinator. I feel like we wouldn't lose much, if anything, in this coaching switch... just a WAG. But that means I want those two 3rd rounders and Sheppard to get his shot more than I want AG. No disrespect to him.

I believe the comp picks would come in 2025 and 2026.

OK... still would like to have them.

This is what I've been saying all year when it comes to the Glenn criticism. Does the Lions defense and his calls frustrate me at times? Yes, do I wish it would be better? Of course but looks at how little resources the Lions have put into the defense compared to the offense.

The O Line has 3 1st round picks, a 1st round running back, 1st round QB(not drafted by the Lions but still a 1st round qb), 1st round WR, and a high 2nd round TE.

The defense has a 1st round pick in Hutchinson, 1st round pick in Campbell(a position that can take time to develop) and that's it for 1st rounders. Their number 1 CB was a number 3 before getting here. Their starting number 2 CB was found off the scrap heap. Their other starting edge right now consists of a revolving door of has beens as is 1 of their interior line positions.

If you look around the league I would venture to guess that not many have used less resources on the defense or less high picks on them than the Lions and a couple of those higher picks like Levi and Paschal have basically been injured their whole career.

This is why I though AG might need 1 more year of "prove it"...

But if teams are looking at AG in exactly the same way as this...

And he gets a head coach opportunity THIS year, then...

Good for him.

I know the two picks are spread over two years.

In looking at the Rams draft, they got comp picks in 2021 and 2022 for the Lions hiring Holmes so it looks like the Lions would get comp picks in 2024 and 2025.

That would work.

I think Glenn will have close to a complete defense next season too, assuming he doesn’t get a gig. It will be interesting to see how much he can get out of them. Campbell will have developed more, Houston will be healthy (or we will be in August and told that he’s close), and I would suspect they would go get him a corner and more line help. It has the potential to be the best a Lions defense has been in quite sometime.

50 million $$ per year to extend Goff? Hello, Hooker...can you give us the same production for less money?

Look, I was all about still holding back on Goff last year. I was worried about his home/away splits... I was concerned about his lack of mobility. But Goff has just led you to the freakin' NFC Championship (at least). Now is not the time to look at penny pinching.

That doesn't mean I wouldn't try to get creative with Goff... back-end loaded deal... see if he'll take a little discount to stay with a team that believed in him and helped him rebuild himself... but I do NOT want to cut out on Goff. Hooker may be the answer in a few years but I do NOT want 2025 to be Hooker's debut.

The Dak extension is going to be interesting to watch because that is probably the best comp for Goff. Goff already counts for over $30 million on the cap. They will probably do something that is about 4 years and $200-$250 million and ramp up his cap hit.

Goff is gonna get $45-mil+, and if he wins on Sunday, probably $50-mil+, and he will have earned it. I'm baffled at people who think A) he should take less to stay with Detroit, or B) Detroit should let him walk in favor of Hendon Hooker.

I still need to see Goff prove it without McVay.

I know another knock on Goff is that he struggles outdoors, I think there may be something to that if its rainy and windy but even if that is the case how often do you actually play in those types of games in any given season? Maybe once or twice at the most.

For example next year the Lions play 15 of their 17 games indoors with only GB and Chicago being outdoors. Maybe we get unlucky and one or both of those games have crappy weather well that doesn't offset the 15 games indoors that he will likely play good to great.

And yeah you may not get lucky having 15 of 17 indoors every year but more and more teams are playing indoors, rumor has it Tennessee will be indoors by 2026 and possibly Chicago as well. It's to the point where you're almost exclusively playing indoors or in places with nice weather with the exception of a handful of places.

they can always franchise him.

that would really hurt their cap.  better to just give him the contract extension which you can fiddle with to make it more cap friendly.

the only way goff doesnt stay is if he gets hurt, hooker steps in and wally pipps him.  but that is a quite unlikely scenario.

Lions have a lot of contracts to get done this offseason. Goff, St Brown, Sewell and I would add McNeill. Sewell is the only one with a 5th year option so the others would be free agents. You also have Melifonwu who could be inline for an extension if he plays like he has next year. Barnes has been solid but he's probably the odd man out with Campbell coming up. You may look to keep Barnes and move on from Anzalone. Anzalone is going to be 30 next year.

Is that it?

Just Washington and Seattle now, Atlanta is said to be hiring Raheem Morris.
