Coronavirus: Already In a Neighborhood Near You

Wait a second, is this a THIRD Trump official quoted saying it wasn't because of coronavirus?  WEIRD

Quote

In June 2018, the Supreme Court upheld Mr Trump's ban, rejecting findings from lower courts that deemed the ban unconstitutional.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said in a statement that the administration had no new planned announcements related to the ban, which he described as "profoundly successful in protecting our country and raising the security baseline around the world".

"Common sense and national security both dictate that if a country wants to fully participate in U.S. immigration programs, they should also comply with all security and counter-terrorism measures," Mr Gidley says. "Because we do not want to import terrorism or any other national security threat into the United States."

HaHa. So  according to the Nature article the variant was going to be NU - as in the 13th letter of the Greek Alphabet but it's already been relabeled in this story as Omicon, skipping the Greek letters NU and XI. I guess 'NU virus or Xi virus were going to be politically unacceptable! I can understand 'NU/New' virus was going to be too messy to deal with, but I bet Trump would have jumped at the chance to call it "Xi". :classic_laugh:

If they would just call it the South African variant it would be so much easier.  The Delta variant started out as the India variant until someone though they were offending someone.

I'm glad they jumped on the bandwagon with the travel ban.  Hopefully it will help but it still allows a lot of people to travel to and from these countries.  I don't care who a travel ban to the US offends, no matter what its for, as long as it is best for the US citizens.  We need to look out for ourselves first for once.

Targeted travel bans are pointless.  Canada has announced bans on the same countries; it is something that governments do in order to give the impression that they are doing something.  Here is all you need to know about Omicron:  a lady in Belgium has it, having just returned from Egypt and Turkey.  She was nowhere near southern Africa.  The travel ban might slow the arrival of the virus, but only for a couple of weeks and everybody knows it, especially the epidemiologists.

Here is another reason why travel bans are dumb:  they discourage the sharing of essential data.  Those countries discovered the presence of a potential variant of concern, and shared the data with the rest of the world.  Their reward?  A travel ban.  On top of all the rest of the things that they have to deal with, including vaccine inequity, they now have this stupid travel ban.  It isn't much of an incentive for the sharing of data in the future.

I will point out that I have read that the problem with SA isn’t vaccine supply. They told the manufacturers to stop sending as they have too many. It’s vaccine resistance. Something like a 25% rate there. But I agree on travel bans. They don’t accomplish what the claim is. They are symbolic

America has always looked to itself first regardless who the president is.  America First is just populist BS.  When we do things for other countries, the intent is to ultimately help the United States in some way.

How does calling it South African variant make anything easier?   We still have to deal with it the same way.

We don’t know where the new variant originated. South Africa is where it was first detected and sequenced because they are doing a great job at those things.  Since we don’t know where they begin trying to assign a geographic name is ignorant and inaccurate.

We still don't know where the 1918 "Spanish" flu started.   But here's a really interesting fact.   Few countries contained an outbreak of it better than Spain did.    First of all, they acknowledged it immediately and told people to stay in (and they did).  Secondly, they weren't involved in World War I.      But because they acknowledged it, they got tagged with it.

My wife's nephew is 30 and just bought a bar in small town Wisconsin within the past year.

He did not get the vaccine because, he reasoned, he's young and healthy, so he had nothing to worry about. The vaccine is for old people, like—well, me and my wife. So he's been working six days a week in his bar, no mask on him, no mask on anyone. Everything was fine.

Earlier this month, he contracted COVID. Laid him out pretty good. He was home for ten days while recovering. He's back at the bar now, but he still doesn't have any smell or taste.

He's getting the vaccine now, because it happened to him.

Multiply this by a few million.

My wife’s uncle is one of two brothers of that generation of 11 siblings left.  He’s in his early 80s.  Entering that phase of falling and all that. Has 2 daughters here. We got a call from another cousin who was contacted by their aunt in california that she’s not heard from him in a few days.  The 2 daughters are not vaccinated, they are in their early 60s. They’re like “well we can’t go check on him…”   So now it’s up to the other cousins to look after him while his daughters are busy living their best life.  And his sisters who all live in California are worried sick.

It’s a weird thing where one of the sisters moved to california back in the early 60s and all the other sisters followed because her grandma moved there too after the grandpa died .  The brothers all stayed in Michigan.

WHO Explains Skipping ‘Xi’ in Naming Latest Covid-19 Variant

Quote

“And ‘Xi’ was not used because it is a common last name,” added Jsarevic, saying that the WHO works to avoid “causing offense to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups” in naming viruses.

Many observers suggested that Xi was skipped as “Xi” composes part of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s name. Former President Donald Trump stirred controversy early in the pandemic by calling Covid-19 the “China virus” — a term Trump repeated as recently as Friday during an interview on the Fox Business Network.

Can't risk upsetting the wokesters or their Chinese overlords.

read this site and you'd have your news a day sooner that "Media-Ite"

That is true.  You should all be proud of yourselves.  This is supposed to be a sports forum site, but now we've got all kinds of "new" people coming here just for the politics and never even posting in the sports forums.
