I think Brown would do well in northern and midwest states in a Dem Primary and struggle down south. I do believe he could be a serious contender though and would be a great general election candidate to go against Trump. Populism vs. populism. He finds ways to win in Ohio statewide when no other candidate for Senate or Governor do. So there is something to the guy, politically speaking, that keeps him ticking in a red state. republicans will make sure to let everyone know he's a democratic socialist, whether he calls himself one or not. They'd do that to any candidate, running for any office. That's no reason not to run Brown. I'm sure the anti-Sherrod TV ads in Ohio already do it and yet he still wins. They are running literal fascists for office, so if they want to call Dem candidates socialists, whatever. Democrats and their campaign teams need to be able to punch back about the literal right-wing fascist, Trump sycophant's they are running on their side. They would say that even if Joe Manchin won the Democratic nomination. I think Sherrod Brown would make a great candidate at the national level. I would have to see his breakdown in Ohio. Does he do well in Cleveland or is he like Klobuchar who over performs in rural Minnesota but is so-so in Minneapolis? Could also nominate Tim Ryan who has similar Sherrod Brown qualities. His run for senate will be a good barometer on whether he is viable or not.

Motown Bombers
Brown is the only Democrat to win statewide office in Ohio in the past decade. He won on the same ballot that Mike DeWine won on. I don't think any socialist attacks will stick. He seems to be able to thread the needle with progressives and moderates. Ironically, all the talk about getting younger, Brown will be 72 by the 2024 election.
CMRivdogs
Since we're speculating, you've got to consider Mitch Landrieu (I know a mayor hasn't won in forever), Roy Cooper (NC) he's won every time he's run in a pink state.

Seems to be center right and fits one of the necessary boxes for a Dem (he's gay), but he's also rich and jewish. Assuming he scores a good reelection in a tough environment, Polis may be the best positioned. The added wrinkle is that relationships with the AA community are critical in the Democratic Party. I have no idea where Polis stands there. But all else equal, he's acquitted himself well lately imo

He still isn't Donald Trump and that is always going to be a factor as long as that dbag is on the ballot. He assumed the role in mid November Quote Since he started on the gig, the administration has deployed Landrieu as a key surrogate when Biden visits local communities to tout the benefits of his infrastructure package, and in the media. Ahead of Biden’s visit to Missouri Wednesday, Landrieu appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe. Every time Biden travels to promote the infrastructure law, Landrieu connects with local TV anchors, regional newspapers and Black and rural radio stations, said a White House official. He’s also playing the role of emissary to local and state pols. Landrieu said he has met personally with 30 mayors and has reached out to every governor in the country. A White House official told us he has spoken directly to 18 governors, including seven Republicans. Some Democratic sources who spoke to us said Landrieu could be a good gateway to the South and would likely be welcomed more than others in the administration in red states. “He is everything that this White House isn't,” said the source with knowledge of administration dynamics, “with the exception of [counselor to the president, Steve] Ricchetti — accessible.” https://www.politico.com/newsletters/west-wing-playbook/2021/12/10/mitch-please-495427
