Talks of a variant kicking Europe's ass right now.

I just hope we are a bit more proactive this time around. I'm not calling for shutdowns or restrictions... Just have tests ready and don't wait too long to authorize the next booster again.

Unfortunately we're not.   What I heard on NPR yesterday was that the administration is running out of $$$ for antibodies and other treatments and the GOP forced them to remove COVID support dollars from the budget bill that just passed.  The prognosis on those I heard is they've got enough to get into May.   This was on 1A show yesterday.

The importance of vaccines and the effectiveness of those vaccines. Imagine of Omicron had been 6-9 months earlier in the US?

If China eventually losses control of Omicron despite the draconian measures to keep the lid on, Xi is going to see a level of pressure he probably thought he had reached immunity from.

I think our method of having the faucet half open instead of closed shut, or wide open, was the correct one.  Omicron was a steady load on our hospitals here, never reaching the stresses they saw in 2020 and early 2021, but it wasn't a cakewalk either.  Could have been a lot worse.

The GOP needs COVID to be raging to help them win in November. They can't risk things going well.

But then they would have to admit that it's a real problem.

If they cared about shit like that.

Covid is "a godsend" to Republicans according to Republicans

Given that we're now pretty much wide open and Omicron's features this isn't a shock. The real metric will be hospitalizations.  Think about how many cases were detected just because people either had to be tested for work or whatever or because they followed CDC guidelines on close contacts getting tested?  That's gone now.   And with the rise of home tests being available how many are tested but not reported?  The low case numbers that are published won't tell the whole story but the hospital situations will.

I just hope our leaders are proactive with vaccination boosters to stay ahead of things.

yup. The low case counts are good to see but they might not really mean much anymore in terms of whether the Virus is circulating out there but only causing minor illness because of the community immunity level. But as Hong Kong shows, Omicron can still pack a wallop for the elderly unvaxxed.

I'm stunned at their low levels of vax rates among that group.

China's locking down a couple of major cities and we could start to see supply issues again. They have an inferior vaccine and didn't go through their omicron wave.

Moderna is seeking approval for second booster

https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/18/moderna-seeks-fda-authorization-for-4th-dose-of-covid-shot.html?utm_campaign=mb&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_source=morning_brew

The request is broader than rival pharmaceutical company Pfizer’s request earlier this week for the regulator to approve a booster shot for all seniors.

In a press release, the company said its request for approval for all adults was made “to provide flexibility” to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and medical providers to determine the “appropriate use” of a second booster dose of the mRNA vaccine, “including for those at higher risk of COVID-19 due to age or comorbidities.”

Annual boosters will be the norm soon.

It's already showing up in Michigan. And I assume other areas as well

So far, there have been 99 cases of the omicron BA.2 sub-variant discovered in Detroit and 21 counties, state health department spokesperson Lynn Sutfin said. The state does not know what percentage of all cases that represents.

i think it went down almost as quickly as it went up.

What went down?  Cases still going up in quite a few EU countries. But I’m not worried.  Saw an analysis that our omicron was different than theirs and having gone they thru that plus our vax rates and immunity will not cause a surge. We might get a wave at some point but nobody suggests we are in for more trouble.  Our wastewater suggests that variant is already here.
