I think it's the consensus that 2 years ago we had no idea what was going on and the fear/panic was real and justified. At the time I found some of the restrictions absolutely ridiculous such as certain parts of stores were off limits, car washes were closed (even though most people could and did use monthly passes) then there was the "you can't buy paint or seeds" restriction that was and is utterly ridiculous.

From a Michigan standpoint, I do not envy the position that Whitmer was put in. What a nightmare. That said, there were things, such as what I mentioned above, that were completely unnecessary and I don't think the general public is going to let that fly when (not if) it happens again.

OK, yeah I remember some, you jogged my memory - I remember the dudes on the local sports channel were going off about how golf courses were closed and that definitely didn't need to happen.   It seemed like there was one point where it was determined that outside activities were actually a good thing.   I agree too about certain parts of stores.   People working outdoors in any capacity didn't need to be stopped.

I went through a few of the schools in the district I work for and not counting the special needs kids and teachers who were all still wearing their masks, Id say maybe at most about 10% of the staff and students were masked.

Ontario lifted its requirements today for the vaccine QR code as a requirement for entering a restaurant but a lot of businesses are keeping it, for the protection of staff and customers.  I guarantee you I will not be entering a restaurant that does not have the QR code requirement.

It's 100% your right to choose that.

It seems bizzare to me where my state, as we never closed or had many restrictions (50% cap at restaurants was about it). Illinois right next door requires vax proof, etc.. This time period in the U.S has to be the most state by state laws/restriction difference than any time in our history. Wether its COVID restrictions are Marajuana laws, etc. fascinating stuff.

Nobody asked for this, but a quick look at Indiana vs Illinois on COVID cases and deaths, fresh off the google machine:

  Pop Cases Rate/100K Deaths Rate/100K
IN    6,732,000       1,680,000      24,955  22,800 339
IL  12,670,000       3,030,000      23,915  36,792 290
    IN vs IL Diff: + 4%   + 17%

Is any of the difference due to masking or distancing requirements? I don't know. Probably due to a bunch of things.

I think another factor is/was the airports that had international travel. I think the infection rates for those states, especially if they’re more densely populated are/were affected with the reflected higher infection rates, sickness, and deaths.

Yeah the golf thing was dumb. I also equate the Jordan series with the pandemic. Our family spent a lot of nights together watching that and tiger king.

I forgot about golf.  Early in 2021 Ontario was the only jurisdiction in North America that had kept golf courses closed.  Bunch of morons.

They could have said no carts or only one person per cart. No foursomes.  Stay six feet apart.

of course nobody would have listened. But I give a pass on rules until around June.

I remember being afraid to touch my mail and scrubbing all of my groceries. That first month of the pandemic was so dark, but it’s wild to think about deaths being like ten times what they thought it could be. I could be off on these numbers, but I remember a worst case scenario of something like 60,000-100,000 deaths in the country at one point. That sounded horrific at the time, and we of course lapped it many times. This is most likely endemic, but I’m glad to see that the new case count is at 620/day here in Michigan.

I remember when it was only 56 cases and everybody was overreacting and no one could buy 409.

I miss that 56 cases guy, he was a climate change denier too.

My wife did get naked in our garage.  That was one benefit.  For a few weeks she would strip in the garage, throw a robe on, then shower.  Then I washed her scrubs and robe.

Pics or it didn't happen 😉

One positive thing that occurred in our household is my wife slowly but surely built up about three months of dry goods, laundry soap, paper goods etc. She didn't panic buy or "hoard". She just bought extra of everything that didn't spoil when she was out.

When this happens again and things may end up going more nuts, we're good to bunker down for months. If she started burying food in the backyard, I'd have to put the kibosh on that!

if she buried food in the backyard that would mess up the lawn and we all know the lawn is more important than food.

Word. But then again there is kimchi. That is allowable.

Some were speculating death counts could go over 2 million in the US, applying the then reported death rate to a projection of a majority of people infected. A million seemed more (for lack of a better word) achievable, especially with Trump in office leading an administration not taking it seriously.

No doubt that spot in the lawn would be cleaned up and looking like new in mere days.

Some people already know this, but Heather Nabozny reaches out to Biff from time to time for advise and reassurance.

I didn't know Biff was so dedicated to the maintenance of a lush, green lawn.  When the border crossing rules get relaxed a bit I'm going to bring my dog over so that he can leave a big brown piss stain right in the middle of it.

Look, I love me some Canadians but you might start an international incident with that. One of my motorcycle buddies rode a full bagger with a passenger right across my lawn not long after a watering and the tire track was there for about 6 weeks. He thought it was hilarious. I've yet to let the air out of his tires.

Seems as though some people are still more wary of the virus still than they are weary of the restrictions surrounding it.

I want to meet the 2% who have no opinion.  They must not be on the internet.

Curious, did Michigan/ Illinois lift mask restrictions at schools yet?

illinois has lifted its mandate - through some court procedures that basically let everyone off the hook.

however, the city of chicago continues to enforce masks in school due to its earlier agreement with the teacher's union.  its the only district in the state that still requires masks in schools.

after their last botched work stoppage (the 4th in the last 10 years or so) the teachers union head is stepping down (dont worry, he's married to the daughter of the guy who owns carnival cruise lines and is very very rich.  as an aside, his wife (the trust fund baby) owns a radical bookstore and tweets out anti police slogans all the time.  its fun to be independently rich!).  so there will be a new election that sets up between the radical faction that has run the union for a while, and a moderate group who wants the union to do less politicking and more, you know, actual work for its members.  we'll see who wins.  the radical union member may run for mayor, which could put another interesting wrinkle in things.
