I had to debunk a friend on Facebook that was spreading disinformation about how the hurricane being made by the government to steal lithium from western North Carolina. It’s really gross how people just believe anything they see on the internet.

Republicans are not concerned about the election, because they believe Trump will successfully steal the presidency, which will be upheld by SCOTUS, which will end democracy as it has been operating. That’s their goal. Republicans don’t want democracy. Democracy is bad for them, because when democracy is strong, they lose.

The wife is supposed to do a girl's weekend in Southeast Florida this weekend.  Very worried that the place will be dealing with flooding and damage.   I'm supposed to fly to Michigan the weekend after.  I'm not worried about hurricanes ruining that trip.

The news about GEICO and other insurance companies refusing to underwrite for Cybertrucks is interesting.

I can see the next commercial:

We're the Jones. We love our neighborhood, but the the people next door, they have this weird truck that we are afraid is going to blow up, and not only that, it smells -- its MUSKY!

voiceover: Geico can't help you with your inept consumer neighbors, but we can save you hundreds on car insurance - well as long as your car isn't MUSKY like the Jones' neighbors!"

I sure hope he’s right.

the long form of that speech is so very good.  The part he describes how angry his father was and how it was the war that made him so bitter.  That generation that Arnold came from had a lot of rebelling to do from that older Nazi generation.  To its credit Germany and Austria did a decent job breaking with the past whereas Japan did not.

People in middle Europe had many relatively positive pre-nazi cultural antecedents they could claim re-connection to. I don't know much about the emergence of Japan from feudalism but I would guess in Japan there were fewer just by virtue of how closed Japan was for so long.

I think MacArthur did a decent job creating the conditions for democracy to occur but for whatever reason Japan was allowed to wallow in victimhood when it had caused far more death and destruction to others than it suffered in the War.

actually...1940s Japan is what a redneck fascism would look like in this country.   The officers in the IJA were not the best and brightest and their prescriptions were always might makes right.

The IJN was terrified of the Army's hotheads and were a bastion of liberality in comparison but their concerns about the Army were such that they withheld information about battlefield losses (e.g., Midway) from the Army to save face.
