These fake cowboys out playing with their guns pretending to be a militia wouldn’t last.  I bet they can’t run 1/4 mile without hyperventilating.  They can’t be bothered to get off their couch because Judge Judy is on.

I know a fair number of liberals who own guns already... and they're excellent shots.

About 20% of Democrats own guns.  It only takes a very small percentage of that to form a potent militia and it's not something I want to see.

For a variety of reasons, I would be very wary about using the 2024 Presidential Election results in making determinations about attitudes on guns.

I'd be willing to bet that the difference in election results in 2020 and 2024 had zero to do with guns.  The gun nuts were already with Trump.

We'll have to wait for Catalist to release their analysis of the 2024 electorate, but while it isn't the sexy answer, backlash against inflation seems to be the biggest driver based on what evidence exists today.

Partisan Rs are currently making the same mistake that all winning sides do in these contests in assuming that their win means that American voters love every single position they take on every single issue. And that's just not the case.

(Full disclosure, I made this mistake too in 2020 at times too, so I am as guilty as anyone)

So you would support militias if they had training camps with organizational rankings and what not?

Expand

I support things like the National Gaurd and US Military. We already have a standing Army, no need for local militias.

The point could also be made that is ALSO to protect the people from a tyrannic government. There is that whole government infringement part.

Which people?  And who decides when the government is being tyrannic?

Who knows. But the way I interpret the 2nd amendment it allows the people to have the ability to defend itself from the government. Government was already armed when it was written was it not?

I'm old enough to remember Cal Gov Reagan getting his panties in a bunch over the Black Panthers carrying rifles public. That was part of the beginning of the gun control argument.

Who is to judge whether a "Militia" is radical like say the Oath Keepers or some left wing radical group similar to Weather Underground? What we would probably end up with would be something similar to the Jets and Sharks.

I just don't see local militias taking up the role similar to local volunteer fire departments or rescue squads. If states and localities would draw up guidelines and regulations so that such groups could operate under strict guidelines, I might agree. But the folks drawn to militias tend to dislike government mandates of any form unless they agree with the mandates. From what I've seen, there is no compromise with these guys. They're basically no difference between them and the street gangs in many local cities.

It was a very small standing army. Size and scope was limited. The founders were very much aware of the British Army seizing homes and businesses following the events in Boston.
Post war there was a small militia to guard the settlers who moved beyond the Appalachians into lands that England had deeded to the native tribes in a treaty post 7 year war (another discussion for another time). Guys like Jefferson and Patrick Henry feared standing armies, so the size of the force was limited in size and scope. They mostly relied on state controlled militias (well regulated)

According to your interpretation I'm allowed to arm myself to protection against any MAGA neighbors who may also be armed because they don't like the county or state rezoning local land for a Mega Mart or something.

After today, January 6th 2021 will fade. Some will continue to track the bad actors, study what a coup attempt looks like in America. But, fade it will until it happens again, fomented by social media, domestic terrorists, cowards & foreign influencers. Our political & justice system failed us.
