mtutiger Posted January 24 Posted January 24 There's a lot to be frustrated about with this point that we find ourselves in, but the preoccupation with the innermost thoughts of these tech bros (who clearly have nothing in common with normal people or can relate in any way to their problems) remains a real crutch for all of us. Literally the only reason we are forced to care what any of these guys think about anything is their money. That's it. Quote
romad1 Posted January 24 Posted January 24 Maybe we can keep this thread going Kyle Cheney @kyledcheney.bsky.social Follow JUST IN: Judge MEHTA has barred Stewart Rhodes and other Oath Keepers whose sentences were *commuted* from going into Washinton or the U.S. Capitol without permission from the court. 1 Quote
pfife Posted January 24 Posted January 24 ooh that's interesting but could/would trump just pardon/commute that too? Quote

There is a lot of basic business blindness going on here because of the bright light reflecting off the shiny new toy. Energy has never been free, will never be free. Even if the marginal kiloWatt can be genated for next to nothing (as per solar or even fusion) the capital input, transmission cost, and maintenance of power systems are and will remain substantial. If AI answers continue to cost a lot of energy, then they will have cost associated with them and people will use other ways to get the same information. Right now the IA you are getting is coming to you subsidized by the suppliers as market investment, but if the cost doesn't come down, they eventually have to make money and the cost will go up and the free stuff will go away and the market will narrow. The energy consumption will have to fall to get the kind of application rates they are dreaming about. Edited January 24 by gehringer_2 1 Quote

Great post - this technology (along with the proliferation of bitcoin mining) is absolute bottomless suck of energy. There's no guarantee that it will be cost effective any time soon Quote

mtutiger Posted January 26 Posted January 26 (edited) Amazing how all of these tech guys sound like 70s era Bond villains justifying their plans (that would exact a lot of pain on all of us) Real "Curt Jurgens talking about his amazing underwater utopia" energy lol Edited January 26 by mtutiger 1 Quote

They're partly right: it is too cheap a commodity for them to charge based on usage, but that doesn't mean they don't charge a high price as the market rate for you to get it in the first place. Andreessen obviously knows this and thus couldn't possibly be more disingenuous than he is striving to be here. Edited January 26 by chasfh Quote
