I'm starting a petition to repeal the states marketing slogan

It's true as long as you're heterosexual.

Is that ban enforceable, or is this one of those outlawing abortion laws on the books just waiting for Obergefell to be overturned?

Republican America folks. Kandiss Taylor, candidate for Governor in Georgia, says that sex education has no place being taught in our schools. When the Duggar Family and the religious right run not only the GOP but America, don't say we didn't try to warn you. Cancel culture strikes again!

MAGA Preacher Greg Locke of Tennessee Burns Harry Potter and Twilight Books, Says They're Witchcraft

Quote

"We are well aware what we are stepping into. Bring it all. Stop allowing demonic influences into your home," Locke continued. "Bring all your Harry Potter stuff. Laugh all you will haters. I don't care. IT'S WITCHCRAFT 100%. All your 'Twilight' books and movies. That mess is full of spells, demonism, shape-shifting and occultism."

Some of us keep getting told that we are being hyperbolic and need to calm down when it comes to the Republicans, MAGA movement and their beliefs about what America should look like. This is what a full on, Republican, MAGA America would look like. Burning books and banning books and we're supposed to cool it? It starts with books and cascades down from there if these zealots are left unchecked and given full control over the country. And if Kevin McCarthy and the radically religious, fanatical, autocratic right get back into power in 2022 and 2024 you can be sure more of this will happen. This is the America people like McCarthy, MTG, Loren Bobert, etc. envision.

How is it that Republicans are out there banning books like Harry Potter and Maus and talking about banning sex education in schools and Democrats aren't screaming about this? We should literally be screaming about it like they do with CRT. It is unbelievable to me that in 2022 a candidate for Governor in one of the biggest states of the union is having a discussion about banning sex ed. Have we gone back to 1960 or something? Just incredulous!

Next thing you know these red hat yahoos are going to be throwing Beatles records into the flames because of that bimbo backwards masking business. (Remember that one?)

If we were to flash back to the 1960s and a more conservative America these religious fanatics on the right would be the ones repulsed by the Beatles style and Elvis shaking his hips. Today, instead of Elvis and John Lennon being sinful, it's Harry Potter and Twilight being painted as witchcraft.

I think that Locke dude is just a troll.   I'm pretty sure he got perma-banned from twitter and when he was there he was not discernable from a troll.

Troll or not, don't you think his viewpoint represents a significant portion of the GOP base, especially those fanatics on the religious right? That is to say, many Republicans on the religious right would be happy to ban books like Harry Potter and Twilight under the guise of witchcraft.

Perhaps because Democrats don't feel as threatened by the burning of certain books as Republicans feel by the presence of those books? People egenrally respond to threats accordingly.

plus it's a purely symbolic act today. You can't actually suppress anything that can be digitized anymore. I can put the text of every book that has ever been banned on one 1/2" SD card and duplicate them to my hearts content or even leave encrypted copies all over the cloud. Talk of "Banning" or "burning" books is dramatic and hyperbolic but the real issues are quiet curriculum choices and there is no need to ban or burn a book to drop it from (or add it to) a curriculum.

While I appreciate the truth that you can’t actually remove the book from being read because of the digital copies, I feel that the physical burning… this act in itself… is more than just “drama”.  I find it excruciating in its message.  Much like carrying a Nazi flag is more than just drama to every soul that sees it - physical book burning is meant to sear your soul.

And, for sure, the curriculum changes should scare the holy hell out of all of us. So, if you have a voice and can bring it to board of Ed meetings in your town, for god’s sake, do it.  Silence is compliance.
