But to cut the current VW a little slack. . .VW was a totally new deal after WWII when the UK occupation governor of the Wolfsburg area (a Major of engineers) resurected the company from the dead. It was a trust run by the local government until it became successful enough to create a corporation out of it. All these things were bombed into dust by the combined bomber campaign and for those elements in the East, the rape of the Red Army. Not that that and the inevitable post-war apologies were enough and VW sure does like to have a scandal now and then (how are those car's doing on emissions?). Henry Ford II was offered VW by the US government as a reward for getting out of the navy to go home to turn around Ford during the war as his grandfather was becoming loony and things were getting dicey..
