In a rational world, after a dozen or so more inconclusive Speaker votes, a dozen or so Repubs in blue districts would cut a deal with Jeffries, change parties and simply flip the House. But it's a measure of the lack of intellectual imagination that Repubs just can't make the break. The Tribal Identity trumps all logical analysis. Just like all the other never Trumpers who just can't bring themselves to leave the GOP even though this GOP long ago left them.

I don't even think they would have to go that far - just going the Fred Upton route (ie. moderate GOP member / caretaker Speaker) would probably be workable.

My thing is that, though some GOP strategists in my Twitter feed seem to think it's the Democratic Caucus's job to clean this situation up, in reality, this is sort of the GOP's mess and it's not clear the degree to which the Dems have a role to play in fixing it at this point.

If it takes dem votes to get a speaker of the house, why would dems pick McCartney?  Why couldn't they pick a better republican person? If one exists lol?  Couldn't they make it where they only need 10 or so GOP votes for any particular GOP congressperson?

This is the point I've been making the past two days.

Republicans in districts won by Biden/ in Blue states... WANT to separate themselves from MAGA. The HAVE to... they have to show themselves as moderate Republicans/ willing to work bipartisan.

This is their chance.

A dozen? Two dozen? 40 or so moderate Republican Representatives (I believe it's around 40 or so) combined with Dems gets the deal that the Dems want, as well as getting what the moderate Republicans want, the Speaker that moderate Republicans want, as well as discrediting the fascist wing of the party,

But on this part...

While it's not their "job"...

It IS their opportunity...

Trump allegedly discussed US nuclear subs with foreign national: Sources

Months after leaving the White House, former President Donald Trump allegedly discussed potentially sensitive information about U.S. nuclear submarines with a member of his Mar-a-Lago Club -- an Australian billionaire who then allegedly shared the information with scores of others, including more than a dozen foreign officials, several of his own employees, and a handful of journalists, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The potential disclosure was reported to special counsel Jack Smith's team as they investigated Trump's alleged hoarding of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago, the sources told ABC News. The information could shed further light on Trump's handling of sensitive government secrets.
