Motor City Sonics Posted July 23, 2023 Author Posted July 23, 2023 Has anyone seen Oppenheimer yet? I have not. Been too busy with work and house stuff. Barbie is going to beat it in the box office. No surprise there, but highly disappointing. Quote

There was a lot written about Blazing Saddles, but I feel High Anxiety was his best film. A great parody of the 1960s and early 70s thrillers. My favorite scene, nobody does it better... Am late to the party, but there's a special place in my heart for his version of To Be Or Not to Be. 1 Quote
LaceyLou Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 (edited) Any drama geeks out there? I recommend Theater Camp. It's a fun movie, and I can think of a few on here who will appreciate the captions at the end saying what happened to the main characters next. ETA: There were lots of people in line waiting for Barbie to begin, and many were there to see both Barbie and Oppenheimer, back to back (both sold out). Even though Barbie isn't my thing, it's pretty cool to see people getting so into it. Edited July 23, 2023 by LaceyLou Quote

Barbie is a huge fad and will die down quickly. That being said... I was deciding on Indiana Jones vs. MI vs. Oppenheimer this weekend. I want to see all 3. But I do not like jam-packed theatres so I don't mind waiting a couple weeks so a crowd dies down. But I still check anyways... Mission Impossible and Oppenheimer were packed in every time slot, every day, every theatre this weekend (I'm close enough to 3 different AMC's...). I saw Indiana Jones. Empty theatre except me so I had it all to myself. The movie was GREAT! They did a great job. I'm guessing the theatres will be filled perfectly (under half-full) where I'll want to see MI in a week or two... and Oppenheimer a week or two after that. I'm sorry... What were you saying about this Barbie-thing? I do remember my sister playing Barbie's a little bit but my memory is really hazy on that. For some reason... I seem to remember my GI Joe much better... But... back to Oppenheimer: You'll be hearing Oppenheimer pretty heavily, IMO, over the next 8 weeks or so. Just a guess. Quote
oblong Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 Going to see Oppenheimer tonight. Been on vacation for a week so what better way to come back than being out until midnight. Barbie is also cool. I like the fact there’s two movies getting all kinds of love right now. Quote
chasfh Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 It’s supposed to be something like 100 degrees this Thursday and Friday. Sounds like a good time to go see Oppenheimer. Quote
romad1 Posted July 23, 2023 Posted July 23, 2023 What was not solid were the previews that went on for 30 minutes describing a pile of hot flaming crap. The prestige movies apparently didn't need to advertise. Sad, because I was raring to see Dune 2 after Oppenheimer -- not some recycled Disney ride inspired movie. Quote
oblong Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 Wow, I really enjoyed Oppenheimer. What a cast. So many familiar faces, even in bit parts. I can't wait for it to come on streaming so I can watch again. I can't sit through 3 hours though. Like a pro I rationed my sour patch kids down to the credits. I'm assuming Cillian Murphy is a shoo in for the Oscar, nomination for sure. I read some criticism about them not showing any Japanese or Native Americans affected but I think that's fine. It's called Oppenheimer. It's about him. I was a little underwhelmed by the bomb scene though. I guess I had higher expectations so that's not to say it's a dud by any means. Quote

My observation is this is the first Nolan movie i can say that doesn't benefit too much from IMAX. The smaller theater I saw it in was just fine. 1 Quote

romad1 Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 First Nolan movie since the Batman movies. I'd bet Memento or Insomnia would be weird on that screen Quote
romad1 Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 (edited) Ok, lets compare five directors who I think are the best not named Scorsese making movies today. Or tell me who you would go out of your way to see a movie made by them. Nolan, Villaneuve, Wright, Fincher, Mendes...who else? maybe I could add Spike Lee. Possibly Oliver Stone. It doesn't appear Terry Gilliam is making movies anymore. My rating based on me seeing it and how good I thought it was: ! - worth seeing, !! - good definitely see it. !!! - you will think this is really good and will think about this movie after seeing it !!!! - You might name a kid after a character in this movie or at least foolishly make passwords using names of characters from this movie. !!!!! - best thing they have done and a movie that will weigh heavily in the culture for generations Christopher Nolan Following (1998) Memento (2000) -- !!! LaceyLou Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 The 2002 version of Insomnia was okay, but pales in comparison to the original Norwegian version. I'd recommend watching that one. Quote

oblong Posted July 24, 2023 Posted July 24, 2023 I liked hateful eight but haven’t had any urge to watch again. But it’s good and definitely worth seeing. Hollywood is one that grew on me more and more to the point I think it’s just below Pulp/Dogs/Basterds and above the Bill movies in ranking. Jackie Brown is hard to rank because so much of it is from Elmore Leonard. Quote
