Abortion and the Politics of Reproductive Rights in the Post-Roe Era

It’s hard to say how many people know somebody that’s had an abortion.

I can promise you that everyone on this board knows someone that’s had a difficult pregnancy where at some point the mother’s well being was in question.

It’s unfathomable that a married mother who gets pregnant from doing things that married couples do will be forced to have the baby despite what damage it may do to her.   I can think of 20 other similar scenarios where this will law impact the well being of the mother.

Amazing the lack of regard these people have for what goes on during a pregnancy.  It’s just not as easy as have sex and 9 months later baby is born.   Many people will die because of this decision.

and don't forget where every miscarriage will be investigated. "What did you do?" "Take any medication?"  We'll have to subpoena your pharmacy and insurance"  "Did you go hiking or running?"

I found out from a friend of a friend of a woman who had an abortion. Fetus was about 6 months old and died so she had to abort it. It got me thinking, if birth starts at conception, could she be charged with murder? The baby is in her care so why couldn't they say she was negligent which is why it died? I know she voted for Trump. I have no idea if this changed her mind.

All this conception talk makes me think back to the Monty Python “Every Sperm is Sacred” skit from The Meaning of Life.

Quite a few female friends that don’t fall anywhere on the political spectrum have been posting things similar to this. The GOP is going to have a huge problem with moderates.

I don't think so. It's pretty cut and dry I think. Gas prices are high, inflation is way up, people's groceries cost more, and they'll go vote Republican because of it.

Not if she accepted Jesus before she died.  Isn't that how it works?

That’s how it’s supposed to work, although I rarely if ever hear any evangelicals speculate that about someone whose sin they hate.

Pretty amazing how something in one state can be illegal and punishable by prison sentences upwards and over 10 years and in other states it is perfectly legal. No other developed country in the world has such radically different laws depending on what geographic location you are in.

There are 85 "developed" countries in the world today 48 of those countries have populations less than California.  I mean I really should not have to explain this much further.

So of those 37 developed countries that are larger than California, how many of them have vastly different laws and penalties based on geographical region? What does their size have to do with it?

Mississippi has the highest infant mortality rate, highest fetal mortality rate and the lowest lifetime expectancy rate in the country. Maternal mortality is 1.9 times higher than the country's average.

The folks who claim to be pro life are actually pro birth. They don't give a damn what happens next.

I posted on the old board some years ago that if these people were going to be pro-life, they needed to be pro-life all the way, with no exceptions for rape, incest, or life of the mother, or else their entire basis for belief is full of shit.

Thing is, at the time, I threw in life of the mother just to be comically extreme. Literally no one advocated fetus over mother at the time. I thought I was going beyond the pale to demonstrate the ridiculousness of it all.

Never underestimate …

It is now completely and totally accurate to call them pro forced birth not pro life

It's really telling that whenever you bring up these examples or when you ask questions about who one thinks should be punished in a post-Roe world, you never get any dialogue or an answer.

These aren't hard questions... nor are they gotcha questions. If one has formulated views on the issue of abortion and it falls on the side of abolishing the practice, it stands to reason that one would have some opinions on cases like the one highlighted in the article.

If I run into any vocal "Pro-Life" persons, I am flat out calling them:

"PRO-RAPE".

And if that starts up a very loud "PRO-RAPE" chant with fingers pointing at the culprits (depends on the crowd and the location of course...); all the more fun.

Oh... and I have an extremely loud voice.

Call me Foghorn "Pro-Choice" Leghorn.
