2024 Presidential Election thread

My hunch is if it was somebody on the right, it's somebody in the gun crowd who saw his bump stock ban brought back to the forefront by SCOTUS a couple weeks ago. Still that's TBD, there's conflicting info, especially since the small donation to Act Blue a few years ago seems to be legit. Although Act Blue tends to put a bunch of social media posts looking for micro donations to senate candidates.

not to be too flippant under the circumstances, but this puts me in mind of Hinkley - who of course was trying to impress Jody Foster. Now just imagine that the country had been a little more progressive a few decades earlier and Foster was out of the closet. Hinkley might have known he was never going be in her potentials list. Might have been one less President shot at.

We’ve had this exact conversation today at my house.

The guy is 20 years old - political partisans are going to want to hang on every biographical detail that supports whatever their conclusion is, but the reality is twofold:

1.) At that age, political views can be very fluid

2.) There is a possibility or even likelihood that is enhanced by the contradiction here (Registered R with an ActBlue donation in his past) that this is just a random nutjob with an AR-15

The politicization of this is really disappointing but unsurprising in our toxic political culture

The intensity of the media today means that something next week will happen that will negate any effects of this situation.

The RNC starts tomorrow, so the rhetoric coming out of there is likely to be newsworthy unfortunately

Oopsie.     Guess it wasn't ANTIFA or BLM or Hunter B.

Give it today, tomorrow tops, and it will be the first two.

So, remember everyone:  George Wallace was a bigot who had a raving fanbase.  He got shot and didn't become President.  Stop subscribing to these anti-Christ/Omen narratives that he's unstoppable.

The difference is that George Wallace never got 46% of any nationwide vote.

That makes sense in theory but up until now it hasn’t been true.  We have violent gun incidents weekly and larger scale mass shootings multiple times every year.   Somehow, we have luckily avoided seeing this type of violence bleed over into the political arena.  The last Presidential attack was Reagan.  Gabby Giffords and Steve Scalise were the last attacks on congressmen.  I fear we are going to see more violent attacks on elected officials going forward.

I think that might have more to do with advances in Secret Service protection than it does about society's ability to compartmentalize and control gun violence.

You spew hate on truth social, sick your magats on the families of the judge and prosecutor's families.

joke about Hillary being taken out in 2016. Plus about a million other vile things he has said on social media and at his rallies.

Sometimes when you stir up so much hate, it can come back and bite you in the ass. Or ear.

You reap what you sow.

That's what shocks me about this whole thing. If the entire story was "nutjob at Trump rally apprehended with assault rifle; possible assassination attempt thwarted by Secret Service" - that's a one or two-day nothing burger of a story in 2024's America, and honestly happens to every President. Remember when the 20yo crazy dude drove a box truck onto the White House lawn last year trying to attack Biden and overthrow the government? Assassination attempts were thwarted pretty much every year when Obama was in office. With the availability of guns in America and the prevalence of untreated schizophrenia, there is a reason Secret Service exists.

But I've seen motorcades and Secret Service protection. They're insanely comprehensive. As I said before, for every agent you see there are 20 you don't. And they're good at what they do, using technology we don't even know exists to assess threats. All of DC was in chaos last week for NATO. There were entire roads blocked, residents' commutes tripled, and police and agents were on literally every street corner in downtown, for foreign leaders that the vast majority of Americans couldn't pick out of a lineup. How does this attempt come so close to killing to the leader of a major political party?

Maybe it's different for former Presidents, especially ones who love to hear themselves speak in public on a regular basis. But for this dude to be able to get onto a rooftop within firing range of a protected person is just insane to me.

I had a former colleague (Florida Man Of the Year 2018) who was arrested by the Secret Service for making threats on Mike Pence on Twitter.

The mental health argument after tragic shootings often rings hollow when you realize Republican lawmakers attempted to cut mental health budgets and services. It rings hollow when they refuse to expand healthcare coverage like not expanding Medicaid as apart of the ACA. There is a clear need for an expansion of preventative mental health services and screenings in this country and yet frequently when lawmakers make even modest attempts to expand coverage and services, you have Republican elected leaders and their supporters out deriding it as socialism and an evil government takeover. That has to change.

All politics aside Trump could not have handled the situation any better. The way he got back up and defiantly stopped to Yell fight. love him or hate him that was courageous in that moment.

That's because Republicans don't want to actually address and solve the mental health crisis, any more than they want to address and solve immigration issues, economic issues, street crime, the unhoused, or any of it. They need those issues to stay live and ever-present so they can campaign on them as well as use them as cudgels to smite Democrats.
