I'll be honest.  I think the trade if it had to be made for a more East Asia/Europe centered defense with our Navy and less heavy forces watching the center makes more sense.   The idea is to protect what is important.  Afghanistan was the lesson in how amazing we are at projecting force anywhere.   The big boy war is what we need to prevent now.

The China-Russia-Iran Anti-Democracy Tripartite Threat is what is currently overriding everything else in International Importance.

Biden got soldiers and many friendlies killed on the botched pull out. He will be remembered for this by the military community.

Sometimes you just can't keep pushing uphill against the realities of the geography. If Afghanistan were not landlocked, and you had a capital either on or with a defensible route to the sea, maybe you could have pacified and protected at least one major population center and let your nation building percolate outward - assuming you could even do that successfully, But Kabul had hostiles over the horizon in almost every direction. With no support for a western agenda anywhere in the hinterlands, and the fractured ethnic situation, Kabul was an ill-omened place to try and plant a western flag.

We learned nothing from the Russian/Afghan war and had the exact same outcome. Except we left billions and billions of military equipment behind.

The intelligence community told Biden and his team that Afghan National forces could hold off the Taliban for at least another 18 mths - 2 years.

Biden was ready to start pulling troops out in February. His generals said: "We're not ready, please push this back at least 6 months." He did that. Based on their request and the intelligence community's advice.

 Negative I am not MAGA. We are the strongest military in the world and were muscled out by a Militia. We could have found a way to hold onto our fortified bases and evacuated the hundreds of interpreters and other personal who laid their life along with their families lives on the line. The gravity of that betrayal is lost in the U.S. They were all slaughtered, women and children. That was a choice the administration made on their own.
