With respect to Detroit, it isn't L. Brooks Patterson's Oakland County anymore... People dont necessarily harbor the same animosities that they used to,

Right - It takes two to tango and the exit of both Patterson and Coleman Young leaves a completely different public dynamic at work. For every suburbanite who hates the city, there is at least one more who pulls for its recovery. And as a practical matter, the resolution of the city's bankruptcy has gotten the city out of the news cycle as an economic crisis hanging over the state where it was for a couple of decades.

I'll say this: if you are conservative in a swing state longing for a new and improved GOP after this, especially knowing that Kamala Harris will in all likelihood be constrained by a GOP Senate...

What is there to lose? On a purely pragmatic level, how isn't the choice obvious?

That was pretty much the argument I made to my sister in a conversation. She doesn't want to vote for Trump (I'm assuming she's a two time voter, I know her husband is) but wasn't sure what she'd get from Harris. I pointed out that it was likely to be Republican majorities in both the House and Senate and she'd like be constrained. I'm hoping my argument worked. He husband is a lost cause, definitely a good ole boy who is very proud of his "Appalachian" accent.

Oh, I fully see how they characterize centrist Democrats as begin "far left", and it drives me bonkers. It's all branding and it works with their base. But it's not true, and I don't know why Democrats don't address it it in a more visible way, because by appearing to ignore it, they're ceding that point to Republicans, and that hurts the Democratic Party with the middle.

I think there are two dynamics at work. The first is that not only a little craziness but also a lot of energy exist as you move away from the milquetoast middle, and you if you can help it you don't want to lose that energy by repudiating/driving those folks away. I think the other is that even among some centrist Democratic leaders (though certainly not Biden), there is more intellectual alignment with the fringes in their hearts than they ever own to because they know they must not. (and to be clear, I think this is true of both sides)

So the Trump campaign and their prominent surrogates closing messages are that America is a trash can, Puerto Rico is full of garbage people, the Congo is sending criminals here to attack our way of life, the election might or might not be stolen depending on who wins, Kamala is for they/them trans people, and she's also a c***.

I don't know what to say other that please go out and vote. Please get everyone you know to go out and vote.

I don't know what the future is for the GOP if he loses... I'm pretty sure I know what it looks like if he wins.

If someone doesn't like the direction he's taking the party right now, this is the moment of choosing.

That's the misunderstanding.

They like the way he is taking the party.

Almost all the people I know who are now Trump voters were one time Democrats, Perot voters, Nader voters, Libertarians, apolitical, non-voters, etc.

Hell, some even voted for Gus Hall.

As soon as Trump expressed his racism openly, they all found their candidate.

Also, its just attrition.... the Pattersons and Youngs are all dead and buried at this point, along with at least some of the people who populated Oakland County and Detroit during their terms. The suburbs of any city, be it Detroit, Philly, Milwaukee, Chicago, wherever, are now populated much more with people who the grievances of the past don't register. Not totally, but they are different and they are changing...

With respect to Michigan, I really think Donald Trump ****ed up when he came to the Detroit Economic Club and took a big giant dump on the city. And wouldn't be surprised why (though polling is close) that Michigan seems to be drifting toward being Harris' best swing state.

(And perhaps why Debbie Dingell, a person who is never relaxed before an election, was playing beer pong yesteday)
