So, I am on a driving trip thorough the south, and I am in Johnson City, TN tonight, after staying in Frankfort, KY last night. I said I would check out the signage and get back to you.

I can say I am seeing less signage than thought I would—actually, less than I saw in northern Michigan and the UP in early October, and it is mostly Trump who's on signs down here.

But something else I am seeing surprises me a bit. In Chicago, when I watch the World Series on the FOX broadcast network, the spots are overwhelmingly for Kamala. Now, Illinois is a settled state, so I was thinking, Kamala must be buying a ton of national time and the red states watching the game must be getting hammered with her. But in these two southern cities, also in settled states, at least 80% of the presidential spots are Trump. As a one-time media buyer, I'm not sure how to guess what's happening here. Are these local spots being bought by the candidates, and the presumptive winners for each state are preempting the other candidate from undercutting them with airtime? What are any of the other possible explanations?

Does the Chicago market overlap into Wisconsin? Perhaps SW Michigan?

Sporting events tend to be national buys - could just be spending decisions night to night by the campaigns?

I live in the Chicago area and otherwise on local TV it's local IL races and the IN-1 and IN-Gov races.

That would be highly coincidental.

I haven't had the chance to go to MI or north of the cheddar curtain this year, but even driving around areas where I have been this year (IL, IA, MN, PA, IN, OH, Upstate NY) it's been striking how few signs have been out in the wild.

There's been an uptick in the last week or so, but it's really muted.

Kenosha County bounces back and forth between the Chicago and Milwaukee DMAs depending on county-level data every two years. Not sure where it is right now, but either way, it's so small, I have trouble envisioning pols paying political rates for Chicago spots just to impact Kenosha.

Michigan, no, never.

I don't think that would explain the preponderances.

It would be - I don't know how ad buys work (if they are night to night or are for the series), but if a campaign is advertising during the WS, it's generally a national buy iirc.

Not always. Networks typically turn a few minutes an hour back to the affiliates for local or rep firm buys, even during top events like the World Series or Super Bowl.

You're correct.... not sure if that explains the difference, but perhaps has something to do with trying to reach Kenosha Co, who knows.

Harris did open a campaign office in Gary. I'm not sure why, and I don't think they have any plans of winning Indiana. Perhaps it's to juice turnout in IN-01? I hear the governor's race is supposed to be competitive.

The Governors race is competitive because the Lt. Gov candidate (they run as a ticket in IN) is certifiable, probably the main reason (her only chance involves a big turnout in that district). Helping Frank Mrvan in IN-1 is a secondary reason, although he's probably OK.

If there is one real disappointment throughout this entire thing, it's that Mitt Romney still hasn't done the right thing here... don't know how much it matters, but it's obvious.

Romney can't help it - he is of the oligarchy.

Thankfully, no one in my immediate family…. There seems to be at least one in-law relative that drank GALLONS of the Kool-Aid.  And, now I have come across some acquaintances, not really “friends”, but were people that I’d definitely had partied &/or worked with… they’ve gone down the rabbit hole. It’s sad to me. I am sure this is a game-changer for me going forward.

I recently had a small back and forth on Facebook with a former co-worker after she posted that the government created and sent the hurricane to North Carolina so they could steal the land and the lithium. She was all upset two years ago when Roe was overturned and is now all MAGA conspiracy head. It’s impossible to debate a conspiracy theorist because they aren’t dealing with any real world logic. It’s really sad how off the deep end so many have gone.
