It was a 5:30 appointment and he was right on time, thank goodness because waiting for it was agonizing. He was a border collie, he was 17 and he couldn't see very well and he really couldn't walk anymore - and that's no life for a dog, especially his breed. He was my best friend. He was my dog for 15 years and he was perfect. I wish I could clone him. I am very sad now that its over but also quite relieved. He couldn't continue like that, he tried to mask it, but I knew he was depressed. Dogs are incredible that way. My neighbors, who are from Mexico saw me carry his body out to the Pet Passages van and they gave me a shrub to plant where his grass hill to the porch is. A very nice gesture. Very thoughtful. The whole neighborhood liked him and more people knew his name than mine. When I take the hill down tomorrow they're gonna know he passed. I am sure they expected it was coming soon. I can absolutely relate. We as people don't deserve dogs. I was at work today and one of the security dogs (probably a bomb sniffing one) was off leash and was just running between the various folks in the hall. Damn if everyone wasn't smiling. Weird, bright moment in the day brought about because at some point 10s of thousands of years ago we domesticated a wolf who was lingering around the fire. Quote

One of his knocks was his swing and miss tendencies but he's at a sub 20% K rate which in this day and age isn't bad at all. Quote

Taking the folks who fear dogs out of the equation (who knows what happened to them or what they were told about dogs when they were younger), but people who don't like dogs, I don't know that I can trust them. Not talking about people who prefer cats, because most of them like dogs too. Talking about the kind of people who can't connect with a dog or refuse to connect with a dog. I'll side with the dog almost every time. Dogs are a gift, they are what people should aspire to be. Quote

Jim Cowan Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 We had a German shepherd when I was a kid, Fritz, great dog, you could fight him on the living room rug and he would snarl and almost bite you but not quite. He was definitely the alpha male dog in the neighbourhood but as far as people went, if we liked someone then he did too. This was back in the days when milk was delivered to your house, and bread too, and even dry cleaning. So the dry cleaning guy came once a week, the dog would wag his tail, no problem. Then the dry cleaning guy got sick, his replacement knocked on the door, and when Fritz saw him he went full ballistic fucking apeshit, he hated this guy so much he was barking and foaming at the mouth. He genuinely wanted to kill the guy, no question, and it took all of your strength to hold him back. This went on for a few weeks, then the regular guy came back. A couple of months later my Mom is reading the local paper and she says "hey look at this". In the courtroom reports there is a mention of the substitute driver, who got 90 days or something like that for passing bad paper. Fritz just knew instinctively that the guy was garbage. 2 1 Quote

Diego had one guy that he didn't like. Down the street from me. He never growled or snapped at him but when the guy reached to pet him Diego backed away very deliberately like "don't touch me" and believe me, he NEVER did that with anyone else - he loved meeting people. Well, this guy was a drunk and he got arrested a couple of times for beating his wife. Dogs sense that stuff. Haven't seen that guy for at least 3 years, but the wife/girlfriend and her kids still live there - so he's either in jail, dead or totally out of the picture. Jim Cowan Posted July 7, 2022 Posted July 7, 2022 Our Fritz would only get truly angry at us for one reason - if you pretended that you were going to hurt my Mom. He would get up and walk slowly towards you, letting out a very low growl. He wasn't kidding. Quote

Occasionally the pups would sneak in to his house through a cat door and he'd just watch them as they stole cat food. But, when i went in to help the super attractive lady who lived there with some maintenance issue, the fellow would stand up, put both paws on my shoulders and not let me upstairs until she told him that I was ok. He wasn't mean about it. He was just doing his job of making sure i wasn't up to anything bad. Quote

My grandfather would come over and the cocker spaniel mutt that we had when I grew up at home couldn’t get enough of him. Jumping at the door, crying and whining to say hello, couldn’t wait for him to sit down so she could climb up into his lap for attention. Oh man, it was like the rest of the world ignored her and he was his only attention when he visited. And she was a pleasant dog for everyone else, but oh man, when he came over, it was heaven on earth for her. Then after she died, my parents got another cocker mutt, and she didn’t like Grandpa at all. She would cower around the house, keep her distance, never let herself within ten feet of him. But everybody else was fine, she didn’t mind anyone else at all. Dogs can be silly like that. Sorry about your loss. Diego sounds like a wonderful companion. Quote
