LongLiveMaroth Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 Great article on Jatnk Diaz. Gonna be rooting for him. https://www.freep.com/story/sports/columnists/jeff-seidel/2023/07/16/detroit-tigers-draft-pick-jatnk-diaz-self-taught-pitcher-prospect-surprise/70414130007/ 4 Quote

I’m a baseball player; I’ve got an advisor to worry about the money side.” Guys like Anderson, who would have projected lower under other circumstances, dont have the leverage in that situation either to demand slot. There's a good chance he makes more even going underslot than he would made otherwise. Which is why teams do it lol 1 Quote
microline133 Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 The Tigers knew exactly the amount needed to sign him, the minute they picked him. 3 Quote

Sounds like he'll sign for a bag of peanuts. Quote

High round picks there is very little doubt what the number/terms are. Lower round picks there can be some uncertainty, but they always have a good idea even on the low round guys. That's where your area scouts make their money....building the relationship with the player/family, and knowing what it will take to sign them. Quote

On the draft subject I mentioned this the other day but not sure you saw it but in a recent Keith Law chat he mentioned that the GM's rarely make any of the pics its usually made my the folks in the scouting and player development camp, how much truth to that is there? I imagine Keith would know better than anybody since he worked in that field but I just wasn't sure if it is like that for every team. Quote

Clark, McGonigle, Paul Wilson and Diaz my favorites. Quote

They may influence strategy, budget approach, etc., but the scouting team is empowered to make the selections. Quote
Dan Gilmore Posted July 17, 2023 Posted July 17, 2023 Is it too early to post a list of those that have signed? If someone has that to share, I think it would be appreciated. Tracking the money would be gravy. TIA Quote

RandyMarsh Posted July 17, 2023 Posted July 17, 2023 (edited) Kiley McDaniel reports that Max signed for 7.7 million which is roughly 600K below slot and just about right on the number 4 pick number which is what the rumor was when we drafted him. Edited July 17, 2023 by RandyMarsh Quote

LongLiveMaroth Posted July 17, 2023 Posted July 17, 2023 Question is does he start in the FCL or Lakeland? 1 Quote

They sent Riley to Rookie league, but he only played 9 games there before they moved him up to Connecticut and in 100 more PA the bumped him to A ball all in the 1st sesaon. Sounds like Clarks is at least as advanced as Riley but with A- gone I would think he has to go to FCL at least for starters. Quote
RandyMarsh Posted July 17, 2023 Posted July 17, 2023 When they interviewed him after we picked him I'm pretty sure he said that he talked to Harris and it sounded to him like he would be heading to rookie ball for the year. Don't quote me on that cause I maybe misremembering the interview but I"m fairly certain that was what he said. Quote
RandyMarsh Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 BTW the Rangers just signed Langford for a little over 300K over slot so assuming it would've taken the same for us if we picked him at 3 then we saved about a million by taking Clark. Quote
LongLiveMaroth Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Looks like Sears took $2,500 less than the slot. 10 (290): Andrew Sears, LHP, Connecticut -- $167,800 (Pick value: $170,300) Quote
RatkoVarda Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 8 signed; 5 known; maybe they can sign everyone; though some of the HS might want to go to college. Orange: Known; Blue: I just completely made up; Green: signed, but unknown; Yellow: HS unsigned 1 Quote
LongLiveMaroth Posted July 18, 2023 Posted July 18, 2023 Lee took 44,900 less than the slot. 6 (170): Bennett Lee, C, Wake Forest -- $297,500 (Pick value: $342,400) Known Total Savings so far: 476,550+641,700+44,900+2,500= 1,165,650 Over Slots: 250,000 Remaining 915,650+787,360 for possible overage without draft pick penalty Quote
