This really has nothing to do with the Tigers but I'm curious why baseball players are allowed to negotiate contracts with agents and pro teams and not lose their college eligibility yet for sports like the NBA and NFL the moment they sign with an agent they forfeit their eligibility.

That is no longer true for the NBA. Players can sign with approved agents and maintain their eligibility, but they have to withdraw their name before the draft.

Hockey players can be drafted and still go back to college with their team retaining their rights. It's common even for first round picks to play an additional season in college.

Besides college, they can go back to juniors or even a pro league in another country, like Sweden or Russia.

Texas State has a strong baseball program.

How do they play in those wooden shoes?

[edit:  I intended to make this about how when I was put into holding in a jail in Texas -- for speeding while my car had a Michigan license plate -- i witnessed that the general population prisoners had wooden clogs.  I now see that isn't what happens anymore because there is a special "inmate shoe company" that makes cheap clogs for them which do not include metal shanks.  Basically, the Texas penal system is gross]

Rogers (20th round) got standard 150K

I've seen nothing on last guy either way - Stewart (17th round HS LHP), but I assume no deal just like 18th rounder; has until 5pm tonight to sign; no big deal either way

pool: 15,747,200

105% of pool: 16,534,560

bonuses charged against pool: 16,477,450 (1.0464%) ($57,110 remaining)

total spend: 17,677,450 - this exceeds both pool and 105% of pool, because you get 150K for players selected in rounds 11-20 that does not count against pool

and I will note that the Tigers actually spent $25,000 more than Callis counts, because 10 of their first 11 picks also got a $2,500 contingency bonus, which does not count against pool either

Great point, I had forgotten about that.

yep. lots of things to criticize Chris for, but they routinely spend over 100% of pool the past few years; 1.0464% this year

He didn't get to 1.05%, so it doesn't matter, he's a miser who doesn't care /s
