Doesn’t look well at all.  Also has a “shot full of steroids” look.

yeah - that's a good observation. If the silly fool was still playing at the Judo master thing into his 50's he may well have fried his back beyond repair -  you've got to know when to back off certain things, and we don't need much more evidence Putin doesn't.

What’s the implication? Ukrainian sabotage? Internal sabotage? Putin covering tracks? Something else not leaping to mind?

Who knows? I would guess sabotage. Something like the Al Qaeda sleeper cell model? If you step back it seems reasonable to believe there are people in Russia who hate what is happening enough to act on that hatred.

Or it could be the result of an American cyberattack. We keep hearing news stories about how the Russians are going to cyberattack us, but of course, we never hear about American counter-efforts. It's not as though that's not even happening, right?

fair point. It's not as obvious what would be subject to that kind of attack at the research institute, it's not as obvious anyway as a facility with a large hackable distributed instrument control system like a chem plant.  But that is one of Russia's disadvantages in this war - There are many Ukrainians with deep personal knowledge of things within Russia that has good intelligence value so there may be a lot of non-obvious vulnerabilities the Ukrainians will be able to exploit. OTOH, Ukraine has already been hardening their assets against Russian intelligence for years.

best guess on the sabotage inside Russia is Ukrainian efforts.  They have the least amount to lose.  Also, Putin might do it to his own facilities to drum up outrage.  He's done that before.

he's in a funny spot. Sort of the same problem with Moskva - he'd love to use the outrage factor but it makes it hard to maintain the fiction that that this is not a serious war with serious potential consequences for Russia. My guess is sooner or later he drops any remaining pretense that Russia is winning a non-war and pivots to "we are in an existential struggle to survive" at which point it probably becomes more dangerous on all sides. Oddly enough the population probably won't even flinch at any realization they were being lied to initially - in their hearts they know they've always been lied to.
