If you want to win in a modern complicated battle you need all the arms in concert.  We used to describe it as a ballet.  It was weird listening to guys who were more comfortable talking about their brand of dip than discussing Swan Lake talk in those terms but that was the phrase we used.

You need to fight in any terrain. You need artillery to fight off infantry and air defense.  You need air defense to fight off air.  You need air to fight artillery and tanks.  You need tanks to fight tanks.  You need drones to give you an idea of what is going on and to augment your air.  It requires organization to de-conflict all those "dancers" in the ballet.  It requires very smart people to provide logistics for the dance.

If you only use one instrument (tanks) at a time on a single axis of attack then you are going to lose a lot of stuff and people will die.

when a country side if full of hostile armed civilians I can understand why the armor runs without infantry! Wasn't one of the 1st things on Western re-supply lists snipers rifles?

Yeah, the bad tactics are as much the testosterone-addled mindset of mobster/KGB officer who prizes bold strokes and toughness over coordination and subtlety.

The most egregious stuff going on is in the Donbas and Luhansk.  The mongrel troops the Russians have recruited there are very unprofessional and demonstrate zero semblance of battle drill.  I'm sure they are fine people otherwise.

While this seems very far away from happening, the fact that this is being reported this way on state TV is pretty telling. Things can’t be going well right now in Russia.
