For younger people, 'you're welcome' or even 'my pleasure' sound too formal and stiff, so they go with 'no problem' or 'yup,' which sounds rude to many people. FWIW, I always liked that a former neighbor of mine would respond with 'of course.' I agree that “you’re welcome” feels stiff, and I usually end up saying “of course” or “sure thing” or “sure”. I would never say “no problem” because when I myself hear it, it frequently feels freighted with underlying feelings that are unspoken, and I don’t think I have it fully figured out. Maybe it’s because it implies that it would normally be considered a problem. In any event it usually makes me feel a little uneasy. I would bet that most of the time people don’t mean anything by it, and that they’re just delivering it by rote, which would mean they’re not engaging.

The common Aussie expression is "No worries", with or without "mate." That seems to be gaining some traction in the US.

Biff Mayhem
And FTR, I’ve been called boss several times by random people in various walks of life and never took it any other way than a substitute for “dude” or “bro” etc. It’s really a big nothing burger IMO. Crazy Cat Gentleman
PDFs with tables of text that are somehow created so that (when copying/pasting) you have to select by column instead of by row. so I want to copy a row of "A1 B1 C1 D1 E1", but it ends up being copied and pasted as "A1 A2 A3 ... B1 B2 B3 ... [etc]", just in a single column—row-based format disappears once pasted. doesn't matter if I'm pasting as plain text or into a spreadsheet or what. (and I'm dealing with a lot more than 5 columns per row here.) there should be a special place in hell for people who set their PDFs up like that (or design the software that creates them that way or whatever the hell the deal is with these files I'm trying to work with). **** **** **** Edited September 20 by Crazy Cat Gentleman
Motor City Sonics
I know someone who's boyfriend is on Disability for PTSD because he got into a car accident 10 years ago. He still drives. He goes fishing up north every weekend. He can't work a desk job? It just annoys me so much. Dude can work - he's just a scammer. And he's very anti-government . You know the same government who pays him for doing nothing. I work my butt off. Now, mind you, I love what I do, so I don't mind, but I don't have the luxury of going fishing every weekend. This dude buys a $2000 fishing shanty for ice fishing. How does he get $2K for that? How does Dexter afford a house and a seaside apartment in Miami? Just got another "I have to leave early today because we're going up North........" Third Friday in a row. Dude has PTSD. Hey, I got mugged in 1991, think I can claim PTSD? Agree-it feels like along with M*A*S*H the only reruns around are Murder She Wrote, Perry Mason, Matlock, Andy Griffith..you get the idea. And I'm pretty sure I've memorized every issue. At least I'll probably be getting around before many channels switch to All Christmas, all the time just before Halloween. Hmm, I believe another pet peeve might be that.... Foot surgery is especially brutal. Sorry you went through it, too.

chasfh
I don’t know why DOTs have to barrel off ten or more miles of lanes on interstate highway all at once when they can work on only maybe a quarter mile of road at a time.

Funny you should mention this as for the last two days the SO has been getting somebody's itinerary texts about airport arrivals etc, all from a wrong number. I hope there isn't a guy somewhere still waiting to be picked up! 🤷♀️

I’ve wondered that too and I think it’s just down to having different crews that do different jobs on the same site/job. Not to mention the setup/tear down people. I’m sure they are busy going around to different places rather than staying nearby on one site all the time moving cones etc. The crews that does the actual work isn’t the same crew that opens or closes lanes. It’s easier for scheduling to just say “close the right lane on I “whatever” for 7 miles between these two exits. Might also be easier for the crews to navigate within the site having that lane clear for them. That said…. Near me is the Lions practice facility. I’d say for 9 months now there’s been the center and left lane closed on this road, for about 100 yards. It’s coned with an arrow sign. No work has been done. It’s the kind of closure that you would expect centered around a line of some sort. It’s isolated. I’ve never seen anybody working there. It’s right near an entrance/exit for two facilities, the Lions and a Ford building. It’s only an issue during rush hours. Part of me thinks a crew was told to set it up, so they did, and whoever is supposed to do the work didn’t get instructions. I also know that DTE is notorious for asking for things like that but taking their time getting to the job. I think it’s a county road. I wonder whether any state governments or unions toy around with road closures as leverage to get at each other during disputes.

In HS we had a friend who's dad did that kind of work. He had the cones in his pole barn. We took them and sealed off Dearborn Hts. (other than Telegraph Road).
