chasfh
Funny how so many people of means believe that everyone must surely have means stashed away somewhere, probably in the dresser drawer along with their bootstraps. Probably why American welfare programs are designed for people of means and their businesses, instead of for people without means.

As far as not having internet or smartphones, they do have neighbors and if they see all the neighbors packing up and leaving, they don't ask why? Plus they had sirens going off for hours. Seems that if you have the money to live near a beach that you probably have enough to own a car or make some kind of arrangements to get out. I know not everyone can, but most of the people that were killed or had to be rescued probably had the ability to get away from the shore and they chose not to. Nowhere to go? B.S., plenty of places they could shelter that weren't that far away from Ft. Myers & Naples. I don't know why. I just don't get it. What is it? Do they think they're being lied to by the media and every city, county and state official? Do they think dying at home is noble or something? You had 4-5 days to pack up your important papers and irreplaceables and get out. Is it really that easy? I don't know. It seems a little more complex than just saying throw some stuff in a car and find a place a few hours away for a few days. I've not been in that situation, so I really don't know. There are shades of gray in this. Some folks probably had no reason to stay. Some are probably part of the vital infrastructure, but maybe they have families that should bug out for a bit. And then you've folks in the middle somewhere in there. When I was young, my father's mother was in the beginning stages of ALS where she was living with my aunt, about a 10-15 minute drive from us. She had a living space on the ground floor and with relatives and friends, someone could keep an eye on her throughout the day. Well, we had a tornado warning one day. Everybody is supposed to shelter in, right? My dad and a neighbor jumped in the car and raced over to my aunt's to get my help get my grandmother to the basement. Technically they shouldn't have been out and about, right? But they were. Some individual situations like these arise, and so what do you do? Lots of people did evacuate. Lots didn’t. Here’s another unique situation. Hospitals still needed to be staffed. With one spouse working 4 days straight at the hospital during the storm maybe the rest of the family says “no way we are leaving mom down here by herself. She will need us when she’s finally able to stop taking care of people on ventilators.” others might have stayed behind because they have heavy equipment and a 4x4 or big boat that could be useful in the days after getting help to people. Or they simply wanted to be there to help in any way. They took the risk so they could support.

Call them names. Nice. Why aren't you down there price gouging bottled water? The new one that's driving me nuts is the "How'd you like to be in an electric car trying to get out of Florida right now?" How about a nice, fresh cup of STFU?

I knew that would come back up and all the reason for your total lack of reading comprehension when I already make disclaimers. I never called anyone names. I am not looking down on anyone. I am considering what I would do in that situation while also realizing there is a small % of people who cannot leave. But your moral superiority is noted. You are a much better person than me, I guess.

djhutch
Companies that outsource deliveries. We have had to have our washer repaired no less than 4x in the last year, and so when it acted up again last month I made the decision to buy a new one. I researched it, asked some friends who have the same washer, & made the purchase online from Costco. It was to be delivered last week Wednesday. They sent the confirmation the day before, & then after the time window they gave me expired, sent another email that said it would be last Friday. Went thru last Friday & nothing - Now it was supposed to be today, & they've canceled for the 3rd time - this time with no clue as to when it might get sent. Ugh...

oblong
Last week I went to Windsor to visit friends for dinner and coffee later in amherstburg. Going through customs was a breeze. No waiting. That was the bridge. Last night we went to the casino to see Bill Burr. Took the tunnel. Again no real issues and things were very fast in terms of customs. The tunnel even has an app now you can prepay tolls with via QR code. the peeve? The layout on the US side of the bridge has always been a cluster. Makeshift lanes. Cones. Handmade signs. I get it that they probably have to shift things around as traffic conditions change. on the tunnel US side when you leave customs you go down this very narrow corridor which looks to be incorrect but it was the only way to go. They have barricades on the side that looks like it’s just storage. Portable Speed bumps scattered around in different directions on the ground. I literally thought I was going into a dead end. My son thinks it’s done that way to keep people from speeding away out on to Jefferson.

Why let me schedule it if you cant fulfill it. it's the constant battle between workers and managers. Managers are psycho paranoid that somewhere, sometime, a guy in a blue collar might have 10 extra minutes in his day, so they schedule the drivers with a slate that can only be met under perfect circumstances. The guys push back by making sure that even when things go completely perfectly they take the full time allotted for each job - (knowing if they do finish early they just get a heavier schedule next time), and then when things do so South, the schedule can't be met. The customer is the collateral damage in this eternal guerrilla warfare. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Edited October 8, 2022 by gehringer_2
oblong
A friend had a washer set to be delivered to their lake house. They said Saturday at 2. They got a call Thursday before from the driver that they are there. “Uh we are an hour away in good traffic. Nobody told us you were coming”. And it’s not like Irish hills is nearby for those guys. CMRivdogs
We went through something similar about a year ago. We bought a new couch from Lazy Boy, This was back in Mid October. Was told when we made the initial payment they had 1 in stock and at the warehouse. I even joked about driving to Monroe myself to pick it up. The hope was to have it by Thanksgiving (last year). No word at all from the store or company for about 3 weeks, so I called. Was told it would be sometime before mid December. I was at about DEFCON 4 but kept my temper. Christmas comes, no word. Another phone call. It was due to be MANUFACTURED in late January. What about the one in stock, sorry about that, can't give me a discount, contract states no refunds... The couch finally show up in mid March.

Biff Mayhem
We bought furniture from Ashley recently and they kept us up to date on schedules etc via e-mail and text every few weeks. It is a very well run business from my experience. We even received the furniture ahead of their projected date.
oblong
we got some from Big Bob's last year and same deal. They told us ahead of time there'd be a delay due to supply chain issues. At one point they called and said one piece could be available but to call back as soon as we could as someone else might snatch it up who was also waiting. It got here when they said it got here and that's all I can ask. Although I laugh at the recent trend of "hey, pay us $50 extra and we will unwrap it for you"
