I looked at one website for recommendations, and a moderator took out all brand names mentioned. While I understand the issue, it's frustrating because knowing which brand names make a good shoe to wear while my foot continues to recover is exactly what I need to make the search easier. Also I tried on shoes half a size larger than normal because they didn't have any in the size I've been wearing for years, and it appears that I've been wearing the wrong size. They feel way better, and not just on the foot that's recovering. Live and learn, I guess. Just wondering whether your physician has recommendations that won’t break the bank. Quote
LaceyLou Posted November 22, 2024 Posted November 22, 2024 There were a couple of athletic shoes she recommended. They're definitely mostly pricey, but not all of them are outrageously so. She didn't specifically recommend any particular brands, though-mostly guidelines of what to look for. At least I can get around a bit, so that I can try some on in person. Getting around Boston on a knee scooter is an exercise in futility.... Quote

My wife had knee replacement surgery the day after the election (we joked, that at least she'd be unconscious for a while after the election). She's been getting around with a walker. It was a major venture today when we hit the grocery store and ventured into a real restaurant for lunch following her PT. I can't imagine doing any type of distance traveling with a scooter, especially in a city like Boston. Hope things heal quickly. 1 Quote

Sounds like if she had to get it done, she definitely picked the right time. Mobility is something I've always taken for granted. I have a lot more appreciation for it now. Quote
Hongbit Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 (edited) Wasn’t sure exactly where to put this one. Columbus, Ohio has undergone incredible growth over the last 25 years. It is now undoubtedly a major American city. Yet, it’s completely flown under the radar for how absurdly ugly and plain it is. I’d argue it’s among the worst looking cities in the entire country. Detroit and Cleveland have taken shots for decades but they both run laps around Columbus from a pure esthetic standpoint. If we were the “armpit of the Midwest” then Columbus has got to be the butthole. Edited November 23, 2024 by Hongbit Quote

I'm as egalitarian as the next guy, but the truth is that most of what makes the more 'beautiful' cities beautiful was rich men or industries that had a local interest and could enforce a level of aesthetic vision at critical points in development history. Almost everything nice in Detroit came out of Dodge, Ford, Fisher and other auto industry vanity projects (and now Dan Gilbert). Pittsburgh was Carnegie and USS, LA is the entertainment industry, NYC the financial money, Chicago was the midwest retail, rail/transport, refining and steel hub. Other than being the state capital and OSU, who or what have been Columbus's big drivers? Edited November 23, 2024 by gehringer_2 Quote

Shades of Deivi Cruz Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 I think downtown Columbus (Short North) is quite nice, but I will agree that it doesn't have much "personality". It could be almost any city in any state. German Village is probably the most distinct area/neighborhood, but it's also not very big. I'm not sure how Cleveland is really any better than Columbus, but it's also been awhile since I've spent any real time in the Cleveland area. Quote
CMRivdogs Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Feeling curmudgeonly today, a couple of peeves in separate posts. We live in a suburban subdivision in a fairly rural area (exurbs). I've been seeing several posts lately about "lost" cats. Hey, you're the ones who allow your cats to roam unfettered around the neighborhoods. Why do you let them out every day and/or open your fence gate so they can escape and leave their feces in our yards. If your cat is a wanderer, get a tracking device. There are chips, I'm sure there are small devices that attach to their collars or can be implanted that will connect to your cell phone. Or maybe just move to a farm. Quote
oblong Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 One of the things I like most about visiting family in TN are the loose dogs. I have cousins who between them and their folks had about 50 acres, with 4 houses spread out on the land they owned. There was always a few dogs running around. It was a rural-ish area. When my dog is outside I can't relax. I leave one of the entry doors, out to the enclosed patio area with another door, open so I won't forget he's out there. But in TN... the dogs are just around. You leave some food out for them, they'll eat it when ready. 1 Quote
CMRivdogs Posted November 27, 2024 Posted November 27, 2024 Curmudgeon rambling #2. #3 (They're related). A) There is quite a bit of construction around the area, basically clearing land for future development. That means there is a small army of "work vehicles" basically dump trucks that carry dirt from places being cleared to places that take the dirt. These trucks are usually older private contractors, and carry big orange signs that say "Work Vehicle". I'm ok with that, that's what they do. What peeves me is the fact that many of them can't go faster than 60 MPH and tie up traffic (especially during the morning commute). If your vehicle or you as a driver are uncomfortable with the posted speed limit, stay off the interstate. Use surface routes. It's safer for all of us. B) Somewhat related, major highways (interstates, divided freeways and such) have on/off ramps. It should be basic driver knowledge how to use them. The ramps are to give you time to safely merge into traffic, allow you to get up to speed and adjust it accordingly to vehicles already using the roadway. It doesn't mean you have to use the entire runway then randomly cut into traffic. If you can't handle it stay on the surface streets. We will all be happier. Thanks for your patience Quote

(I don't mean red/blue politics). It's the my dog pooped but I'm too lazy to clean up. Or the person who has the aggressive dog and is too busy socializing to pay attention to it. Or that one person who always brings treats and gets angry when it's mobbed by a pack of canines. Quote

They're not native to the US, and can do a number on local bird populations. Also... average longevity of outdoor cats is about 5, for indoor cats, 12-15. Need I say more? 1 Quote

LaceyLou Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 Between cars, trucks, mopeds, bikes, and scooters, I think it would take forever to list all of my peeves when it comes to traffic here. But... one that has bothered me lately is construction workers who insist on parking on the sidewalks near my building. The road is mostly closed to traffic while they're working (including no through traffic at all), and there's plenty of room for them to park at the curb. So why do they have to block the sidewalks, which are already less than perfect? Quote
Motor City Sonics Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 So now folks want to cancel Band Aid for "generalizing" Africa? Really? Lets not talk about the money raised from the single and Live Aid and Live Aid 25 and We Are The World. Yeah, **** Bob Geldof, he's horrible for doing that. What a horrible human being. Please people, focus on real problems. Quote
oblong Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 I hate... hate hate... when there's a group email on something and you include someone else to get their input or to answer the question... and they reply just to you with either the answer or another question. Quote
oblong Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 My mortgage service company are complete hounds.... I have from the 1st to the 17th to pay it each month and I just do it around when a certain pay period hits. I called them last week because I needed a copy of somethiand and instead of helping me they're like "DO YOU WANT TO PAY IT NOW!!!????". Told them I was doing something at the moment so please just help me with what I need right now...." Every time I log on their site they want me to refinance or take cash out, etc. MY RATE IS 2.5% dip****s. Why the **** would I refinance? Before I do pay it each month they call at least twice. I got a message yestrerday from a "debt collector" complete with the disclaimer. That's the words they used. Didn't identify who they were. I searched the phone number, because I pay all my bills and anybody acting as a debt collector is a scammer, and it was my mortage servicer. 1 Quote

LaceyLou Posted December 13, 2024 Posted December 13, 2024 So far today I've gotten 3 smishing texts about packages the USPS supposedly can't deliver because of a problem with my zip code. All are from the Philippines, but from a different number each time. UGH. Quote
