Tiger337
I'd rather see the players make the money than have it all go to the owners. Everything that is done to structure pro sports leagues is done to help owners make profits. It has nothing to do with competitiveness or fairness. In the end, they just put everyone in the playoffs and everbody is happy. Edited December 21, 2022 by Tiger337
Tiger337
Wow, all of the sudden Correa is a Met and will play along side Lindor. It happened over night. I don't think we've ever seen that happen so fast before where a deal falls through due to a physical and another team swoops in immediately. Billionaires are seeking to own the other planets of the solar system. It’s getting harder and harder to care about all this stuff. It’s like I’d rather just see us tear down all the idols, melt the gold down and give the money away and become hobbits or something. Lol! They just need to share revenues equitably. It is kind of crazy how it appears to all go so quickly like that. So, there is the timeline that is public, but there is also the timeline of communications that isn't public. Those details and exactly who spoke to whom among all parties would make for a fine story.

It's hard to argue that players aren't well compensated. If you think too many teams qualify for the playoffs, just state that, without conflating it with irrelevant issues like relegation. casimir
Relegation is a poor concept from the standpoint that the arrangement of teams and possible resulting of current season playoff berths are based on previous season(s) results. Applying it to baseball would be completely asinine.

RandyMarsh
The Mets payroll this upcoming season before the Correa signing was 446 million after luxury taxes, so add another 30 million to that with Correa and whatever extra luxury penalties come with it and you could be looking at 480-490 million. Just insanity!

McCann would be one piece that the Tigers have a roster opening for. Looking over the rest of the Met 40, they seem to be heavy in pitchers. But one other interesting salary that might be of interest is RHH OF/1B Mark Canha ($11.5M in 2023 with a $11.5M team option or $2M buyout for 2024). Moving Canha could be helpful to both clubs. Mets still need some relief help as well. Really, along with Mark Vientos, I'd be asking about Brett Baty... he bats left handed and if they have Correa manning the hot corner now, it's hard to see where he fits into the plans. And honestly he'd have a legit shot at being an opening day starter on this team. Not sure if it's possible, but if they took on McCann and somehow could pry loose a guy like that, I'd be a fan

I know Cohen is loaded but that's a lot to pay for McCann! I would ask for a lot more than mid-level prospect; and offer the Mets something actually useful, like Foley or Faedo. with one more move, Cohen will run a 2023 payroll + tax that will clear $0.5B!!! Literally no idea if he cares about any savings when the dollars are this big. But with Correa at 3B, Brett Baty might be more available. He could be a long term piece as a LH slugging 3B; same age as Tork

Tenacious D
There was a lot of speculation yesterday on Twitter that Correa’s physical was a smokescreen and that he was getting cold feet and didn’t want to go forward with the contract with SF. If you’ll recall, Cohen had said earlier in the week that they were late getting to Correa to negotiate so he had put the interest out there. Another player spurns SF.

Or to the extent that it does motivate relegated teams, how does it help in attracting talent to come sign with the club? When I started watching EPL, I started following a team that was ultimatley relegated during the last season in the Premier League (Burnley F.C.).... they are currently leading in the EFL Championship League and stand a good chance of coming back, but guess what? Whenever they do get back, they are more likely than not gonna be cannon fodder again because in any given year, only 6 teams out of 20 in that league have a chance of winning anything. And they are the lucky ones, some relegated teams never come back! The culture of English football is different and fits within it's context I guess, but as a fan of Major League Baseball and of a team that plays in the league, I do not want that and do not see how it benefits fans in general. Hmm, this could be an opportunity for Detroit (and other teams) to look at and 'act' upon. IF they could get Canha (OF/1B) and McCann, salary relief for NYM - if they actually even seek it (crazy... but it hits our payroll though but these two players could help for 2 yrs) and a top of the line prospect like BBaty (or at least MVientos+) for RP and a mid-level prospect package - it might solve a few areas in one deal. Also, as someone else mentioned, I wonder if the SF move gave Correa cold feet in that it would have been a very pressured position- and in a not so hitter friendly ballpark as well. With NYM he is not 'the guy' with many stars surrounding him. Edited December 21, 2022 by alex

It really hurts the Mets as a trading partner for one of the bigger names that they kind of are set at starting pitcher. Without that being a need, I'm sort of skeptical that the value is there for the Tigers to pry loose someone like Baty. But nonetheless something worth asking about and would ultimately be worth taking on McCann. Edited December 21, 2022 by mtutiger
alex
Just now, RatkoVarda said: so Correa flunked himself to take less money? More data will come out. Who knows. I am not saying he decided on less money - as he agreed to SF initially. Yet, maybe he thought it over, had some hesitation and this gave him a 'window' to get out of IMHO, what would have become a VERY pressured situation. Sometimes when it comes to that much money a person can decide (family involved too remember) on what is best long term for many reasons and the few (to him maybe) extra beans may not be worth it. No doubt several things may have been going on here... Stay tuned to the same 'Bat' channel in Gotham City, lol...
Motor City Sonics
Hey, we can't even sign a utility player like Brandon Drury. Come on, man. Seriously, are we playing Kody Freaking Clemens at third this year? I know hands are tied, but this is really deflating. This is Chris. This is our future, isn't it? Nothing year after year. We're the Pirates now...........we might stumble into the playoffs one year and then sell everything immediately and start over. Still like the front office moves so far, but those won't pay off for 4 years. So 2023, 2024 just mean nothing, I guess. As long as Chris breaks even. This sucks.
