I also use threads but to me it’s more like Reddit. I get lured into it from either FB or Instagram because they push a topic.  But the algorithm is way too targeted.  I read some threads about air travel and I get them all know.  But it’s also a clickbait haven. Someone just trolling for engagement.  And do not ever click a picture of a female because that will never go away. I wish I could modify it.  I don’t need that stuff.

but sometimes I come across a topic that interests me.

15 minutes on BlueSky and it already seems more low stakes and fun than Twitter is... makes me wonder whether this is what Twitter was at the beginning (I didn't get more involved until 2015 or so)

I wonder if he didn't want his actual name in his handle.  That would be fine.

Judd Legum: "The Guardian will no longer post its content to X" — Bluesky (bsky.app)

We wanted to let readers know that we will no longer post on any official Guardian editorial accounts on the social media site X (formerly Twitter). We think that the benefits of being on X are now outweighed by the negatives and that resources could be better used promoting our journalism elsewhere.

This is something we have been considering for a while given the often disturbing content promoted or found on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism. The US presidential election campaign served only to underline what we have considered for a long time: that X is a toxic media platform and that its owner, Elon Musk, has been able to use its influence to shape political discourse.

X users will still be able to share our articles, and the nature of live news reporting means we will still occasionally embed content from X within our article pages.

Our reporters will also be able to carry on using the site for news-gathering purposes, just as they use other social networks in which we do not officially engage.

Social media can be an important tool for news organisations and help us to reach new audiences but, at this point, X now plays a diminished role in promoting our work. Our journalism is available and open to all on our website and we would prefer people to come to theguardian.com and support our work there.

Thankfully, we can do this because our business model does not rely on viral content tailored to the whims of the social media giants’ algorithms – instead we’re funded directly by our readers. You can support the Guardian today from just £1/$1.

My main concern about Bluesky is what happens when the Russian operatives, bomb-throwing radical right-wingers and leftists, charlatans, and other unsavory characters come into that environment with the intention of poisoning it and dragging it down to the level of X? Is there any mechanism in place for policing that, or will this become just another poster child for bogus free speech absolutism? If there is no actual governance—if it operates strictly on on-your-honor norms and not actual policies with real consequences—then what’s to stop that from happening? Hopefully there’s some governance in place. Does anyone know?

At this point bsky is just a port in a storm of billionaire excesses.  I think its struggling with growing this much so soon but the crowd there seems to be self-regulating.  I guess I'll give it a beat.  But so far so good.

There are super powerful blocking features in bsky and there are people actively curating block lists for all of those kinds of folks.

That has been a nice change.

The thing to watch out for is whether you agree with the folks on the list.     For instance folks disagree on Rick Wilson and i saw him on a block list i was considering.

I've not consumed any #nevertrump content since the election although i feel great empathy for them.  I'm just too angry at this point.

Does anyone know who or what "Raelene Oullette" is? That's a bluesky account that started following me out of nowhere. A bunch of people here follow it, and it follows over 3,000 accounts, but there is but a single post from it. Can anyone vouch for it?

a lot of interesting comments about the brand building “resistance twitter” folks that the bsky folks are leery of joining.  It’s not the worst concern to have.

I suspect it's spam because she sent me a direct message...
