MIguy Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 We need 5 moderate republicans to get sick of the BS and flip to the democrats. Quote

oblong Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Is there even a mechanism to allow for a case where some R’s cave and vote for Jefferies? How does it even get to a vote? Quote
1984Echoes Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Straight: They'll bring it to the floor to try and pressure for Johnson to win, even if he doesn't have the 217 in conference. Which opens the floor up to anything, including 5 deciding to do a switch to Jeffries in order to end the pain. Subterfuge: Mods say: "yeah yeah, sure... we're on board"; but do not actually agree with any agreement that caters to the Fascist Faction. On the full House vote... Quote
1984Echoes Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 To whit: https://www.yahoo.com/news/screwed-anguished-house-gop-seeks-233759265.html ...Yet there’s little hope for relief among the bitterly divided GOP, where the fruitless search for a speaker has become so miserable that some members even floated a return to former Speaker Kevin McCarthy — with Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) as an “assistant speaker.” (The idea has not been taken seriously inside the conference, though McCarthy later received 40-plus votes on the final ballot, coming in second to Johnson.) Others are again mulling ways to empower acting Speaker Patrick McHenry, maybe even without a formal vote on the floor, an idea that risks constitutional challenges. “The animosity is high,” Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) said. Fellow Floridian Rep. Mike Waltz, added: “My fear is that if we keep doing this somebody is going to side with the Democrats." Quote

If 5 were actually ready to switch sides they tell McHenry they are ready to elect Jeffries and ask him to convene the house to order and recognize someone to nominate Jeffries and ask for vote. McHenry - apparently a straight shooter, would pretty certainly do it. Quote

Chipping away at the Constitution like that might actually be an attractive proposition for several dozen of those people. Quote
1984Echoes Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 I think they're going to coalesce around Johnson. He of election denial/ refusal to certify the electoral count/ and author of the amicus brief to the Supreme Court to suspend MI/ PA/ etc's votes in an attempt to overturn 2020. And the "moderates" are good with this. Is anyone in the Republican Party still interested in democracy? The Constitution of the United States? The United States of America itself? Do they want to split off the center/south of the country and create United Whites Only America States? Just asking... Quote

gehringer_2 Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 (edited) Dems should have tried to get Emmer, they'll regret it if Johnson makes it and he isn't losing anyone so far. Edited October 25, 2023 by gehringer_2 Quote

The GOP didn't even really give them a shot. I have to imagine Emmer withdrew as he was told he wouldn't get the few crazy voters he needed. The GOP did this to themselves. From a Dem viewpoint, it might be good to head into the next election with the Speaker pushing the abortion issue. The GOP would be best served to ignore and hope voters don't fixate on that. Quote

The optics of Emmer getting pulled down for, in large part, voting to certify in 2020 while this guy (who came up with the SCOTUS Amicus Brief) gets elevated is gonna likely be exploited as well. 1 Quote
MIguy Posted October 25, 2023 Posted October 25, 2023 Jeffries is going off on Republicans right now and it's glorious. Dude gives the best speeches. Quote
