How long before pickleball goes the way of racquetball?

man when I was a kid racquetball was king.  You had those clubs popping up with a bar in it.  As I got older it evolved to Wallyball, Volleyball in a racquetball court.  Before any of us had kids we'd do that twice a week.  Play a few games then drink cheap beer out of pitchers and eat pizza in their bar area.  Do those places still exist? The few I can think of closed down.

In the 80s, you couldn't take a piss without hitting a racquetball court. Now there are seven public courts in the entire city of Chicago, with five of them in modest means neighborhoods on the south side. That last part, I think, is pretty telling. I don't know even one person who plays. Do you? I'm not sure anyone who told me they are off to play a game of racquetball, or they recently played a game of racquetball, for at least a couple of decades now.

And Wallyball! Man, I forgot all about that one, but yeah, I played that, too.

My son's graduation all night party in 2019 was at the Fairlane Club, which during it's hey day was a members only club for professionals.  Had all that stuff.  I was a chaperone at the party and during one of my shifts was assigned to the area where the courts were, basically to make sure nobody was making out in a closet or deserted space.  I grabbed a racquet and ball and started hitting it around.  broke quite a sweat doing it.  But I never formally played it.  Just goofed around before being told to "get out of here" by an adult.

I used to play raquetball and it was my hamstrings' nightmare. I have wanted to take up pickleball because it looks fun and all ages can participate.

I started back to sand volleyball last week for the first time in years. I play twice a week indoors from September to May every year but sand is a whole different animal. We played last night and I am reminded of my age/physical condition this morning.

Never played it. My old boss from Windsor played Squash. He always had huge welts on his arms from playing.

Maybe you're just a touch young to remember, but it was seemingly everywhere and seemingly everyone played it.

I just saw on the news that for the first time since 2001 Bud Light has been surpassed as the top selling beer in the US, it was pased by Modelo which completely caught me off guard. I had no idea that beer was that popular.

My 22 year old drinks Modelo when he will drink beer.  Has nothing to do with the 'controversy', this goes back over a year. I just noticed it when he'd come to games with me.  I only drank it when in Mexico City or a restaurant in southwest Detroit.  I thought it was because one of his best friends is from Mexico and that was the influence for him.  But they are a primary sponsor at Comerica Park now.

Racquetball was here to stay, too, at one time.

Raquetball was always a sport of a certain income. Low income folks couldn't afford memberships to the gyms/facilities that had the courts. Pickleball equipment is incredibly affordable and courts are popping up everywhere. No membership required because it can be played just about anywhere. So I took the long way to say that I think you're wrong on this issue. Let's bookmark this and revisit in ten years 😄

I work out at a city facility.  When it's nice out we will go outside on the area that was recently turned into a pickleball court.  Yesterday a bunch of young people showed up wearing Lions gear, 10 in total.  I finally asked them why they all had Lions shirts on... they are summer interns working for the organization out of Allen Park.

The parent company of Modelo is the same that owns Budweiser, except in the US where the Modelo brand was sold of to avoid anti trust action.

Its only one data point, but there were pickeball courts installed about a year ago in a park along one of the bike trails I use.  7 or 9 of them, I can't remember how many.  I rode by one day, and they were all in use.  I was astounded.  Came back about 75 minutes later and there was still a gathering there.  Now, they're not always being used.  I don't know if it was a league or maybe it was a group function or something like that.  But it does seem like they are popping up all over.

There are 2 courts in a senior living community along the bike path in the other direction.  Its common to hear the sound of the racquet and ball as I go by.  Not every time, but frequent nonetheless.

I had someone tell me the other day that pickleball is actually dangerous.   Apparently, the small court gives some of these seniors a false sense of security and they run and lunge after balls they never would on a larger tennis court.  All sorts of knee, ankle, and Achilles injuries popping up.  Makes sense I guess.

I've been reading a lot of astronaut and space books, from the Mercury to Apollo eras.  Handball was a very common thing to play for those guys.  In fact the only time I've ever seen it referenced is in that context.  Was that a big deal in the 60's?  Maybe it was a southern thing?  These guys had to stay in great shape so I imagine it's an intense game to play.
