CMRivdogs Posted March 27, 2024 Posted March 27, 2024 Now it looks like Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Va) will see the bulk of traffic from the incident. That means a huge increase of trucks hauling containers along I64, just in time for the Spring and Summer tourist season. Happy Happy, Joy Joy Quote

It looks like they set the ship up for a turn after the power came back on after the first blackout, then they lost power for the second time. The rudder was hard down for the turn, maximum power on the prop. The ship was aimed for the middle of the span, when the power went down for the second time, lots of energy in the turn and the rudder was locked hard down from the lack of power.... No way to steer without power. Possibly primary and backup power systems malfunctioned (my thoughts). It was a case of cascading failures. When was the last time this ship was inspected. This ship was Singapore registered, which is supposedly one of the better countries in terms of maritime standards. I don't know that kind of propulsion this ship had, but many similar container ships use a single massive low speed diesel engine - up to 14 cylinders so huge a person could easily stand inside one. Yes, but it's Biden's fault. Why? Post hoc ergo propter hoc, that's why (at least with the Right's logic). Quote
gehringer_2 Posted March 27, 2024 Posted March 27, 2024 (edited) as a practical matter, the one thing that could be done to at least help insure against this particular kind of accident would be to require that a tug (or two?) stay on escort with any ship above a certain tonnage until it clears the last harbor bridge. The operators would scream about the expense, but if you are going to run huge ships with single point of failure engines the only ultimate safety is to have another engine with relevant power out there with them. Motor City Sonics Posted March 27, 2024 Author Posted March 27, 2024 (edited) I'll tell you how this will hurt Biden. Now, companies all over the world will jack up prices even more claiming that shipments can't get out of the harbor in Baltimore, whether this is fact or not, it will certainly be used to gouge people even more with this Greeflation. Greedflation? Using the word inflation to falsely jack up prices to a degree far beyond the natural inflation. Yes, it costs Five Guys more to make a burger, but is it THAT much more? No, it's not. Not per burger. But any excuse to screw the consumer, right? And you bet they'll pin this all on Biden. The Republicans had Mike Dukakis holding the prison gate open for Willie Horton in 1988 (when it was a Republican Governor who signed the law that let him out), they'll have Biden steering the ship here. Hopefully Moderates and Independents won't be so dumb to believe it. Edited March 27, 2024 by Motor City Sonics Quote

That was 50yrs ago though, so maybe traffic patterns have shifted. It's actually not an uncommon pattern in the US that by the time a bridge gets built, the need for it goes away. In the local area the I280 bridge in Toledo was built to get around a draw bridge where I believe the river traffic ceased not long or even before the bridge was completed. I'm not sure the same wasn't true of the I-75 Zilwaukee bridge. Speaking of the Toledo drawbridge formerly known as I-280…. smr-nj Posted April 5, 2024 Posted April 5, 2024 Well that was interesting. 🧐 A 4.8 magnitude earthquake hit about 10:22 this morning. Just a few seconds in duration, but enough to shake the chair I was sitting in - I thought something hit my house… or something somewhere exploded. (Or that the cat was attacking the chair? 🤪) I was totally confused … then the news / neighbors confirmed it was an earthquake. The Ramapo Fault line runs through the NJ county I live in, and even though the center of this quake is 50+ miles away, because it was actually on the fault line, we felt it , definitely. Quote
chasfh Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 I don’t know exactly what would happen to NYC or Chicago if a 6+ earthquake were to hit, but I don’t think hastily-constructed buildings like my house are made to withstand that. Just—please, god, let me be out of town for that. Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 Wrestlemania 40 is this weekend and I haven't been this excited for a Wrestlemania in ages and ages. Now that Vince McMahon is gone from WWE and not in charge of the creative direction of the company things are sooooooooo much more interesting to watch. Quote
oblong Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 I heard they are going back to the attitude era type action. Is that true? Quote

They are allowing, in small doses, more profanity and a little bit of blood on the shows now. They aren't allowing the amount of blood and profanity they had when Austin was the main guy on the show. There is also much more respect for women in today's WWE product than in the Attitude Era. Quote

The eclipse: "You can use these to stare directly into the sun for $3." Turned out to be a great day for totality here. Not perfect, there were high clouds. But with the eclipse glasses, I don’t think I could tell a difference. Temps got up to low 70s, so that added to it. Part way through totality, I ditched the glasses and just looked around. Pretty surreal to see how dark it had gotten, I guess I wasn’t sure what to expect. I kept them off and observed the other side of the eye of the hurricane and the relightening of the environment. It was just kind of stunning how quickly that occurred. Quote
CMRivdogs Posted April 9, 2024 Posted April 9, 2024 Now that we've survived the eclipse, it's time to embrace The Great Cicada Invasion. It looks like Michigan will be spared, Chicago and Northern Illinois may be close to Ground Zero. Hongbit Posted April 11, 2024 Posted April 11, 2024 Rain means most of the later groups won’t finish today and will have to play as many 27 holes tomorrow. Not a good thing for all of the players with damaged knees that have some difficulty walking the course who are trying to win their 6th green jacket. Quote
