I don’t think that role (for either Fox or Patricia) is anything more than a respectful nod to experience, a relatively small pay check, and allowing them a voice in a room. Extraordinarily insignificant in the grand scheme of things and not worth thinking too much into.

john fox is 68 years old.  its a retirement plan sop to someone who has been in the league a long time and hasnt been a defensive coordinator in 20 years.

Sure, Fox may be more a retirement plan and Patricia may be more him seeking to attach himself to a good team/defense in the hopes that he can become a DC again for some stupid franchise. In any event, I don't think either has any sort of decision-making role.

the only thing you really know about john gox is that he once was head coach of a team that went to the super bowl and he's now with the lions.  the latter really being your reason for somehow liking this hire.  if/when the bears hired (and fired) him, you didnt care and would have laughed.  but when the LIONS hire him, its somehow a great thing.

patricia as a dc has a more successful resume than fox.  but you ignore that because you know patricia sucks.  fox sucks too.  he was awful with the bears.  he's old.  this is just more retirement money for an old dude with connections.

For christ sakes, all I said was "Meanwhile, the Lions brought in John Fox for a similar role. A guy who has coached multiple teams to Super Bowls." That is a factual statement. He was a better head coach than Matt Patricia. I never mentioned anything actually about his defensive coaching. I have no idea why you are making a big deal over this. But since you brought it up, as defensive coordinator with the Giants his defenses ranked 3rd, 8th, 23rd, 5th, and 16th. Three top ten finishes in 5 years. He made the Super Bowl as defensive coordinator with the Giants. He had 5 top 10 defenses with Carolina. He even had a top 10 defense with Chicago. Matt Patricia had the second worse defense in NFL history with the Lions. It shows that Patricia likely wasn't the reason for those good New England defenses but Fox has had top 10 defenses literally everywhere he has gone to. The same cannot be said for Patricia.

I do think it is a good hire to hire someone with that much coaching experience for the role he was hired to. I never said it was a great thing. I inferred it was a better hire than Patricia. Are you seriously arguing otherwise? Are you seriously making a big deal about a defensive assistant? It was a ****ing throw away line and you want to keep arguing it.  Of course I didn't care when the Bears fired him because I'm not a Bears fan, I mean WTF?

It's more of an advisory role and I would rather have someone like Fox who has decades of experience vs Patricia whose proven to be nothing more than Bill Belichick's lackey and someone everyone hates. I never thought that would be controversial but here we are.

Maybe meathead Dan Campbell is really secretly very smart and likes to be able to draw from the best minds as he develops game plans and strategies for getting the most out of his young players.

Having a guy like John Fox in the press box is a no-lose situation.

Fox wasn't hired to be defensive coordinator, position coach or assistant coach. Campbell and Glenn are still a bit raw as coaches and I don't think it's a bad thing to bring in someone with as much experience as Fox has. My original point was that I would rather hire Fox than Patricia. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that would be a debatable stance.

matt patricia: successful assistant on multiple super bowls.  im sure its a great hire as a defensive assistant just like john fox.  lol.

Fox was a successful head coach for two franchises and his work with the Giants is well documented. Apples and Oranges comparing him to Patricia. Fox is a good defensive mind and a good experienced voice to have in the ear of Glenn just like Dorsey is for Holmes.

With the Bears, much like the Lions, I think a lot depends on ownership and how the front office is run.

Comparing the "success" of Patricia and Fox is like trying to compare Dave Wannstedt to Marty Mornhinweg

exactly.  both hires are nothing more than the good ol boy network getting someone a job.  john fox sleepwalked through his last job and he'll sleepwalk through this one too.  patricia's younger and has had his (undeserved) reputation as a defensive guru exposed for the fraud it alwaya was, so he might actually try.

which -as we all know - is probably not a good thing!  😀
