Remember when you were a kid at Christmas and you had a hard time falling asleep and  you woke up to get your presents early in the morning?     Might be feeling like that tonight.  Sounds like things will be fast and furious.

I'm pessimistic that they get Ray, but if they did, a rotation with him, ERod and the kids seems really really solid.

if we get Ray we may also get Kriedler at short.    🙄

They need some defense up the middle, but Simmons had a .558 OPS this year.  If they can't do better than that, they might as well go with Kreidler (who supposedly is a good defender).

Speculation on Petzold's part, but he seems to be suggesting this is Plan B if they can't land one of the SS?

Avila has never had a plan B before, so I suppose that would be progress.

unless Simmons had some kind of injury his 2021 numbers look pretty depressing. It wasn't bad luck for Simmons - GB  rate was up, barrels and hard hit balls were down, Z contact was down, K's were up.

If Robbie Ray 2022 looks like Robbie Ray 2021, he and a terrible hitting but good gloved SS might still make for an interesting alternative to Correa plus Peralta or equiv  getting 25 starts.  They can keep looking for a SS in trade or a deadline pick-up if we were actually threatening to make the playoffs. The downside is that we have been sold a bill of goods about the defensive prowess of our minor league talent too many times in the past to have all that much confidence that Kriedler, or any one else in the system, really has an MLB SS glove.

and it also could be Robbie Ray's agent jacking up the price for his guy.    Believe nothing.

Could also be Avila signalling to any SS he's talking to that Tiger money is not going to stay on the table long. You just never know.....

I wish they would have signed either Gausman or Gray. Imo, Gray is a great value.

I could live with a stopgap at short as long as he can defend. Ray, ERod,Mize, Skubal, Manning, and Turnbull look really good.

If we sign Ray, would the Tigers use Mize or Skubal to get their next SS from a team that has minor league options, ie, Yanks and Padres?

Hey, they have to be agile.  For all we know the remaining SSs might be asking for too much (either dollars or years), uninterested, and/or looking to return to their previous clubs.  And it could be that they are just playing the negotiation game.

I'm not sure about pursuing Ray.  He's had two fantastic seasons and a bunch of meh.  That worries me more than too many lefties in the rotation.

On top of the ones already mentioned, there's Gleyber Torres. Assuming the Yanks do something in free agency.

High risk, high reward. Would be buying low.

My guess is that Ray will want a long (7 years) contract for about 30 million/year.
