Tenacious D
Just now, mtutiger said: I tend to think they're gonna go more lower rotation, high risk/high reward type with another SP signing (maybe one of the Andersons). Which is fine... if you pencil in ERod 1-4 and are comfortable enough with Alexander, a fifth starter type could match up well with Alexander to cover the 5 slot. Stroman is definitely more of a nice to have than a need to have. But also wouldn't mind seeing them use some of the money saved to some good use. Agree on all fronts. After signing Baez, it will be interesting to see if they spend anything else this offseason.

sabretooth
My guess on starts: Skubal 30 ERod 28 Mize 28 Manning 25 Alexander 23 134 from these guys, 140 if they blow the doors off, or 125 if there are several minor injuries/DL trips. That leaves around 25 starts for ??? give or take a couple. With the signing of Baez, there should be enough $ in the budget to acquire one decent SP. Motor City Sonics
Again, I will bring this up from the past. Many of us wanted Rich Aurilia when he was a free agent. Seattle got him so we took Carlos Guillen off their hands. Guillen was a huge part of this team's resurgence and Aurilia looked like, well, a steroid flash-in-the-pan (he was Bonds' teammate). We won. Not saying Carlos is a steroid user, he obviously is not, but we were so focused on the big name that we lost sight of the fact that any of the big FA shortstops was going to be a big upgrade over what we (didn't) have. Someone is going to sign Correa to a ridiculous deal. Let it be their problem if he doesn't live up to it. The one year he hit over .300 was the year the Astros were stealing signs. He hasn't come close other than that. Great player, sure, Superstar? I don't know. Signing him probably prevents the Tigers from doing any other big moves for the next few years. Now they have some wiggle room to add something they might really need. Edited November 30, 2021 by Motor City Sonics

RatkoVarda
Rondon would be a high risk / high reward signing, say 1/24. But Boras looking for multiple years IMO. then lots of options for 2023: Alexander, Wentz, Faedo, Turnbull, Brieske, Madden

I see Alexander as a bullpen guy that starts late in the season again. I think they are going to sign another starter. Maybe Peralta comes back, maybe Stroman or Rodon. I would love to see them sign Rodon just to spite the White Sox

sabretooth
The Baez signing isnt what I was hoping for, in that his hitting approach (low LD, high GB, low FB, low BB, high Ks) leaves him prone to a big die-off hitting wise if his bat speed slows a bit. On the bright side, there will be less strain on the budget. I think there's a good chance that each of the 8 fielded positions will have a main guy who will deliver between 2-3 WAR, likely delivering 22 positional WAR including a total of 0 - 2 for Cabrera and the bench. I also think that there's a good chance that the rotation delivers 10+ WAR, or even 12+ if they acquire a decent SP. Add 3 WAR from the pen (similar to 2021) and thats looking like about 83-85 wins. Probably a little short of the playoffs unless they are expanded, but good enough to build on.

Teams always hand off a dozen or two dozen starts to guys like Funk, Wentz, etc....I think we have less of a luxury to rely on spot starters especially given how tight the playoff chase will be, and when you factor in a couple of DL stints for main rotation guys. RedRamage
10 hours ago, kdog said: Even for Henning this is shameless water carrying: The difference, dear Henning, is that Cabrera was older when he signed his big extension and was already a middle of the road (at best) defender at perhaps the least demanding defensive position. Correra is young, and very good defensively at perhaps the most demanding defensive position. So let's say that five years from now Correra (now around the age when Miggy signed his big extension) starts to slip defensively... Well, move him to third where he's then be an above average defender, or to first where he's be an elite defender. Furthermore, I think it's questionable how much Miggy's contract prevented other deals from happening. The Tiger payroll has been very low lately and they could have easily added to it if necessary. Now... having said ALL that... there is some logic in not putting all your eggs in one basket. If you can get an A- player for a decent amount cheaper than the A player AND you are then willing to use that saved money on upgrading other positions as well, it may be a better over all move. MLBTR is saying that it's reported to be $140M... over six seasons that $23.3 per... over 7 it would be an even $20M of course. Compare this to a likely $30-35M per year that Correa will command that's a pretty huge bargin.
