There  is a difference between ex-players and a reporter.  There is no reasonable way they can expect an ex-player to side with the owners or to even be neutral.  They are going to support their bros.  But they may require a reporter to be at least neutral.

Being neutral is what got Rosenthal shit-canned.

Manfred will be like Gary Bettman. Everyone thinks he’s lousy at his job and should be fired except for the 30+ people he actually works for.  He will be a lightning rod for them.  His job is to make them money and grow their investments.  That’s it. Every decision is based around that.

And he makes it so obvious.  Other commissioners showed some appreciation for the game and its history (or at least pretended to).  Manfred seems to not even like the game or know anything about it.

Gary Bettman is a good example.  For years at the start of his career whenever he attended a game, everyone around him would be calling out "where'dja play yer hockey Gary?"  The owners though have always loved him, and he absolutely owns Donald Fehr.

I heard a rumor he wanted them to pipe in boos when they gave out the Stanley cup in 2020.

5. The problem with league-owned media

MLB insider Ken Rosenthal is out at MLB Network after more than 12 years, reportedly due to critical stories he wrote about commissioner Rob Manfred, Jeff writes.

The backdrop: In the summer of 2020, Rosenthal's columns for The Athletic analyzing the stalemate between MLB and the MLBPA "featured some light criticism [of Manfred]," writes NY Post's Andrew Marchand.

  • June 16, 2020: "Rob Manfred finally seems to be figuring out he has no choice: Strike a deal with the union and salvage the 2020 season, or ruin his legacy as commissioner of baseball," wrote Rosenthal.

  • MLB Network unofficially suspended Rosenthal following that piece, keeping him off the air (with pay) for nearly three months. When his contract expired at the end of 2021, the network didn't renew it.

Of note: Rosenthal, 59, is still a senior baseball writer for The Athletic and an on-field reporter for Fox Sports, so he and his famous bowties aren't going anywhere.

What they're saying:

"I worked for Turner Sports, which operated NBA TV and NBA.com in partnership with the league, for 14 years. You know what David Stern did when I wrote or said something he didn't like? He called me up and cussed me out. But he didn't go to my bosses and try to fire me."

David Aldridge, The Athletic

The big picture: We don't know if the decision to part ways with Rosenthal came directly from Manfred, but the fact that it's even a possibility highlights the problem with league-owned media.

This kind of cements what a lot of folks think about Manfred, doesn't it?

Dan Patrick has talked about his dealings with David Stern and Bud Selig.  Now, he never worked for either in an official capacity/hierarchy like Rosenthal's situation (as indirect as it is).  But he's mentioned that Selig would routinely listen to him while scarfing down a hot dog and a Coke from a hot dog cart outside and challenge Patrick's opinions would Selig felt appropriate.  Stern would also go head-to-head with Patrick on air on certain issues.  Sometimes these debates were on air and there was good back and forth.

Uhhhhhh ...

Well, I guess McCosky's gotta work in this town, so ...

FWIW, ZIPS is far less impressed:

Here's some bonus commentary about the bullpen from Szymborski's write-up:

While ZiPS generally likes the rest of the Tigers, we come now to the bullpen. Think of the characters you’ve disliked the most in TV and movies. For ZiPS, the Tiger bullpen is like a horrible mashup of Andy Bernard, Neelix, Councilman Jam, Ted Mosby, and Scrappy-Doo all smashed together into a Katamari ball, destroying every bit of joy in the universe like the slime from the second Ghostbusters movie. ZiPS doesn’t project a single member of the bullpen to be clearly better than ordinary, and unless I’ve somehow programmed an algorithm with a ridiculously specific, targeted hatred, the Tigers would be wise to make some additions here, especially if quick contention is the plan.

All that said, I suppose we can dream on the idea of Chris Fetter and team unlocking a great deal of latent talent that would push the pen up to the top tier of the league.

We can also dream about Scott Coolbaugh unlocking Miguel Cabrera's youth and helping Miggy deliver a 30/100/.300 season for one last hurrah.

I don't have the insights to question ZIPS calculus, but they are predicting

Franklin Perez to be more valuable than Funkhouser

Zac Houston to be more valuable than Wentz

and Turnbull to pitch 98 innings.

So why should I pay attention to that?

yeah - those are pretty terrible - just bad research.
