Hongbit Posted March 4, 2023 Posted March 4, 2023 We can now add thunder snow as a Detroit thing. Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted October 16, 2023 Posted October 16, 2023 RIP Florine Mark, founder of Weight Watchers. Weight Watchers ads with Florine Mark are a Detroit thing I remember growing up. Quote
Motor City Sonics Posted October 19, 2023 Author Posted October 19, 2023 Isn't Sweetest Day a Detroit thing too? People in Albuquerque sure don't know what it is. Wouldn't fly there, anyway, it requires effort. It's not called "The Land of Of Mañana" for nothing. Quote

Sanders in Detroit turned it up a few notches... a great lakes thing along with areas in AZ and FL. Quote

New Mexico has their balloon fest (this time of year) and guys roasting chili peppers on the side of the road in those tumblers that you see on lottery drawings. It smells incredible. Other than that, ABQ is a bunch of strip malls and generic-looking suburbs with a big mountain next to it. It's not that exciting. Quote

Mr.TaterSalad Posted September 4, 2024 Posted September 4, 2024 Three of my favorite uniquely suburban Detroit things are getting good burgers from old bars that have been around forever. Miller's Bar in Dearborn, Mason's Bar in Livonia, Red Coat Tavern in Royal Oak. Every metro area has it's place for a good dive bar burger, but nothing compares to the three of these places IMO. Me too. I used to go to Mason's a lot when I worked at plymouth and Middlebelt. I've been to Red Coat once... Not a fan of Miller's but I admit it's been 20 years at least. They recently sold to new owners. I think burgers are getting out of hand at some places. But I love a basic bar burger and if done right it's all you need. If you come to Dearborn and want something I think is better than Miller's try Fall's Sports Lounge. That's my go to bar burger now. Quote

Mr.TaterSalad Posted September 23, 2024 Posted September 23, 2024 Another uniquely Detroit thing is the Ritchie Valens Summit Place Kia song. You should be driving a Kia, from Summit Place Kia! Quote
Mr.TaterSalad Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 Another Detroit thing I loved growing up as a kid was listening to all the great morning shows we used to have around here on the radio. **** Purtan and Purtan's People in the morning on Q95.5 and Oldies 104.3 and Drew and Mike on the WRIF. My dad always had Purtan's show on in the car when he'd take me to school or when we would be driving around in the summer time. Loved the cast of characters they had on his show from the late Doc Andrews, Big Al Muscavito, Ankles Stewart, his daughter Jackie Purtan, Dana Mills, etc. Also loved all the gags and bits he used to do. They don't do local radio like this anymore. When I got older and into high school and college I discovered Drew and Mike on WRIF in the 2000s. Ed Belfour blows, the prank calls, funny but real names they'd call. It was such childish, stupid humor at times, but it cracked me up. Quote
oblong Posted September 26, 2024 Posted September 26, 2024 yeah our Detroit radio is unique. Someone should write a book about it. There's a reason Howard Stern never took off here in syndication. We didn't need him and it is a Detroit thing to be loyal. You have success here and we remember it, whether you are a fringe Detroit Tiger or Red Wing on a championship team or a radio host. I would listen to JJ and KC. I don't remember who was where at the time but WLLZ had Mitch Albom on in the morning to do some sports, he wasn't hte host, just the guest, that led to his evening show on Sunday, which led to his WJR show. In my college years, early 90's, Drew and Mike took off and they changed it. They used to do music but eventually realized the listeners didn't want that, they wanted more bits. It was like listening to two friends talk about stuff going on. I would go to bed listening to WJR or WDFN and at some point in the middle of the night I would get up and switch the radio from AM to FM, and knew exactly how far to move the dial to get to WRIF. There was a non local station near 101.1 that would come in at night that I had to avoid. Their hey day was epic. I will never forget when they brought up Delbert Harris for an event. Quote
chasfh Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 My favorite morning guy is still Howard Stern when he was on W4. Steve Dahl was being syndicated here on WABX at the same time so once Howard left, I migrated over there. Once the Dahl morning show fell apart, I was left with J.J. and the Morning Crew, who were OK, I guess. Then I went to college, and once I came back and started doing 9-5 work in an office, that’s when I discovered Bob Edwards and Morning Edition on WDET. Quote
